ANDREWS AFB –

Aviation Week’s Pentagon Editor Lara Seligman flew in the backseat of U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds F-16 Sept. 13 for an up-close-and-personal look at the Thunderbirds’ show routine.

"We got a little dizzy doing a quadruple aileron roll, flew upside-down during the inverted-to-inverted pass, pushed through the intense, high-G “max-turn half Cuban eight,” and more," said Lara.

Watch as Lara joins Thunderbird Number 7 Lt. Col. Kevin Walsh, a career F-16 pilot, as he runs through the Thunderbirds’ best-known maneuvers one-by-one in the skies over the eastern United States.

This is Walsh's last year with the Thunderbirds - next up he is hoping to become squadron commander at Osan AFB, Korea.

Unusual and compelling urgency” ... B-)

The Space and Missile Systems Center released a request for information Tuesday for a group of at least seven next-generation strategic missile warning satellites.
These space-based sensors would constitute a follow-on for the current SBIRS early missile warning system.
Because the requirement comes with “unusual and compelling urgency,” SMC expects to award SBIRS contractor Lockheed Martin with an initial deal for the Next Gen system.
SMC said it would hold an open competition for production of later satellites in the program.

:woot:

If all goes according to plan, Air Force tactical fighter jets will fire lasers in 2021, testing capabilities from the service’s now completed laser triad’s new weapon system.
The Air Force Research Laboratory closed the triad Monday, awarding Lockheed Martin a $26.3 million contract to design, develop, and produce the actual laser portion of the lab’s Self-protect High Energy Laser Demonstrator (SHiELD) program.
With SHiELD, AFRL hopes to create small yet powerful laser systems on tactical aircraft for self-defense purposes, with focus on ground-to-air and air-to-air capabilities.

"The Great Hypersonic Race" ...

The US is behind in hypersonics technology, the result of not rapidly following up on prior successes, being risk-phobic, and being wildly outspent by China.

The new National Defense Strategy, however, demands that the US face the reality of "great power competition" and regain the lead in hypersonics, which Pentagon research and engineering chief Mike Griffin has pegged as his No. 1 priority.

Griffin notes that hypersonic missiles are tactical systems with strategic effects.

Funding is ramping up, as are a number of programs with the Air Force, DARPA, and the other military services, and Griffin is rationalizing those efforts under a single hypersonics roadmap to expedite success and avoid unnecessary duplication.

http://www.airforcemag.com/Features/Pages/2018/July 2018/USAF-to-Deploy-Fifth-Gen-Fighters-to-Europe-Again-This-Summer.aspx

Quote

Lastly, I would like to announce that we will be welcoming back U.S. 5th Generation assets into the European theater later this summer.
These assets will work with U.S. and allied forces that are already in Europe including partner nation 5th Generation assets to build on the integration from previous deployments.
The integration of 5th Generation assets allows the coalition to maintain the air superiority advantage by complementing the capabilities of our powerful 4th Generation fleet.
These assets continue to be a game-changer in developing the right size and mix of capabilities to compete, deter and if required, win.

:woot:

Quote

The NEAT acronym combines the first letter of the acronyms that define the missions for each of the three platforms it could replace.
Those are the E-4B’s National Air Operations Center (NAOC) mission, the C-32A’s Executive Airlift role and the E-6B’s dual assignments as an airborne command post (ABNCP) and Take-charge and move-out (TACAMO) platform.

Un Minuteman III ... fa i capricci ...

Quote

Minuteman III Destroyed Mid-Flight During Test Launch ...

The Air Force destroyed an unarmed Minuteman III following a test launch early Tuesday at Vandenberg AFB, Calif., when it developed an “anomaly” during flight, the head of US Strategic Command said Wednesday.
An Air Force crew launched the missile for a routine test Tuesday, and at first it “was perfect,” US Strategic Command boss Gen. John Hyten said Wednesday at the STRATCOM Deterrence Symposium in Omaha, Neb.
“It came out of the hole just fine, but somewhere in flight we saw an anomaly,” Hyten said.
That anomaly created an “unsafe flight condition” so the crew decided to destroy the rocket before it reached its destination, Hyten said.
Failures such as this are rare, with the last one occurring in July 2011, and “this is the reason that we test,” he said.
Now “we have to go figure out what happened” and learn more about the Minuteman III fleet to make it safer and more effective in the future.
“We test because we’ve got to make sure things work … and make sure missiles are safe, secure, and reliable,” Hyten said.
