Former CIA chief Robert Gates brought a very negative view of the Air Force with him when he took the job of Secretary of Defense.

In his book, “Duty: Memoirs of a Secretary at War,” he describes USAF as “one of my biggest headaches;” a perception Air Force leaders were never able to turn around during his five-year tenure at the Pentagon.

In the book, Gates sticks to his story about why he sacked the service’s top leadership and shot down the Air Force’s most important programs, but his memoir reveals he often based his decisions on cherry-picked facts that suited his prejudices and agenda.

Pentagon’s proposed budget would fund “adaptive” engine development: USAF ....

 

The US Air Force will establish an “adaptive engine” demonstration and validation programme in fiscal year 2016 if Congress approves $1 billion in proposed funding, the USAF confirms to Flightglobal.

The proposed investment, announced 24 February by US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, stands to benefit General Electric, Rolls-Royce and Pratt & Whitney.

The Great American Warplane Cull Is About to Begin - Air Force wants to cut hundreds of aircraft by 2019 ....

 

The U.S. Air Force has announced a plan to retire more than 500 older warplanes over the next five years, while adding just 200 new planes over the same period.

If Congress approves the scheme, the Air Force will drop from 5,194 planes to 4,814 between now and 2019.

It will still be the biggest and most powerful air arm in the world … by a large margin.

DHMD (Digital Helmet-Mounted Display) per l'USAF ....

 

The US Air Force confirms that its digital helmet-mounted display (DHMD) project seeks to develop technology for use on a variety of aircraft, including tankers, transports and most jet fighters.

The service tells Flightglobal its DHMD effort, detailed in documents posted on the government’s procurement website, aims to develop technology that could be paired with Gentex HGU-55/P and HGU-56/P helmets.

Pilots who fly all USAF fighter aircraft, with the exception of Lockheed Martin's F-35, use HGU-55/P helmets, it says, as do some pilots of USAF fixed-wing cargo, tanker and airlift aircraft.

Sequester Projections ....

 

The US will be left “less ready and less viable in meeting national defense requirements both now and in the future” if sequester fully returns in Fiscal 2016, Maj. Gen. James Jones said during a House Armed Services Committee’s seapower and projection forces panel.

Jones, Air Force assistant deputy chief of staff for operations, plans, and requirements, said that a return to sequester caps would mean the Air Force would have to “revisit” the decision to cut the KC-10 fleet “in order to garner savings … [of] $2.3 billion in the [Future Years Defense Plan] and $2.6 billion in the out years.

” Divesting the KC-10 fleet would incur the least amount of additional risk, said Jones.

Alternatively, 152 KC-135s, (just over one-third of the USAF tanker fleet), all 52 C-5N variants, or 80 C-17s (about 37 percent of the nation’s airlift capacity) would have to be cut to achieve the same savings.

“Again, none of those are good choices, and they all come [with] significant increased risk to our ability to do our task,” Jones said.

Defense officials have previously testified that sequester cuts would put the nation’s readiness in jeopardy.

Air Force Space Command airmen last week launched a National Reconnaissance Office intelligence satellite from Cape Canaveral AFS, Fla.

The successful launch was treated as routine, but it quietly marked a significant milestone in USAF launch history.

It was the Air Force’s 100th consecutive successful national security space launch, a string of successes that dates back to 1999.
