Once again a newer armored car design was placed on an existing truck chassis as was done on the successful Lancia I.Z. model. Looking like a tandem axel Lancia I.Z., this vehicle was a new design, not an update. In 1934 Fiat began to produe an armored car based on the Fiat Dovunque 32 tandem axel military truck. The vehicle was not an all wheel drive as only the rear 4 tires actually had power going to them. This vehicle was rather underpowered and proved to be terribly slow. This vehicle saw service in East Africa and Ethiopia.

Stupendo. Questo, invece, dovrebbe essere l'antenato del Panhard con le due ruote centrali cingolate. Pensavo fosse un'invenzione francese degli anni Cinquanta, ma questo è almeno dieci anni precedente.

Trackless Tank

 

April 1941 - Seen above are soldiers inspecting a trackless tank at Fort Myer, Virginia. Tank was manufactured by the Trackless Tank Corporation of New York, and submitted to the Ordnance Department, U.S. Army, for inspection. Preliminary tests indicated that the tank was adaptable for reconnaissance purposes. The tank weighed 10 tons. During tests at Fort Knox, Kentucky, 45 mph was achieved across rough country, with a 37mm gun and 2 MG mounted in its turret. It was powered by a 250 horsepower diesel engine, and carried 1/2-inch armor. Tentative plans of the Army call for a redesign of the superstructure for better arming of the tank.

The Newton Cargo Carrier

 

 

Newton made cargo carriers for the British Army. When the US entered the war, a Newton was purchased and brought home to study and copy. Buick, Studebaker, and Overland all made virtual copies - right down to placement of the bolts (though it is claimed that Buick actually made some slight improvements in the structure). The only real exception was that each used their own engines in place of the British one. 22,000 copies were to have been built by 1919 for the great push. The war ended before serious production began. All models had a 3 ton capacity and could travel 6 - 10mph.

The very first true tank design from the Land Ship Committee. Designed by a Mr. Tritton of the William Foster and Company LTD, and Lt. Wilson of the RNAS. Construction began on 12 August 1915 and utilized Bullock tracks imported from the USA. The engine and transmission came from Foster Daimler Tractor. The machine was armored with boiler plate and designed to mount a 2pdr gun (never fitted). The turret was a dummy. The tracks gave considerable trouble to this design. The machine was designed to cross a 4' trench or surmount a 2' parapet.

God bless the men in this machine! In 1940 war hysteria gripped New Zealand and an effort was made to produce a home grown tank. It was decided to armor an International Harvester* farm tractor to make use of equipment on hand. The result was an amazing "tank" called a "Bob Semple" after a politician in New Zealand. Bob was a popular, colorful, Labor politician (just like an American Democrat - only worse). Backing this wonderful idea (probably because Bob was) were the Prime Minister and Minister of Defence (who was Bob). Bob must have been impressed by the U.S. Disston "Tractor Tank" and the idea that a tank would actually be named after himself! Bob probably had visions of Semples storming the beaches and taking Berlin or Tokyo! Rube Goldberg himself could not have designed it better. Apart from being just plain ugly to the bone, the front gunner actually had to lay on a mattress on top of the engine in order to fire his weapon! The Semple had a searing top speed of 24 km/h but had to slow down or even stop in order to shift gears. The "tank" was highly unstable in movement and top heavy. The Public Works Department tried to give this "white elephant" to the army and even offered to convert their entire fleet of 81 into Semples (at a cost of only 4200 pounds sterling apiece)! The army took them, tested them, and even paraded them around the country in an effort to whip up morale. After the laughter subsided, and in an rare display of military intelligence, the army returned them (I am sure that they only needed to have knocked on Afganistan's door to find a buyer as Disston did). Only 4 units** were built before public ridicule stopped the production. The Bob Semple was armed with 4 machine guns, it was 12 feet tall had had a crew of 8 men. 8 men? I can understand 5, but 8? 5 were probably soldiers, 1 was a shop steward, another fended off the birds trying to roost, and the last took out the trash once a day and waved to the people. There is a rumor that after the war Bob took a job with Ford and helped to design the Edsel and fuel tanks for the Pinto. He later went to Yugoslavia and influenced the design of the "Yugo" but this is not confirmed. The reported weight was from 20 to 25 tons. The extreme swing in reported weight may have been design differences between all 4 units** produced or incomplete historical data. The production of this tank was not New Zealand's "finest hour".

 

*Janes reports that the type of tractor was an International Harvester. The book "Pictorial History Of Tanks Of The World 1915-45 by Peter Chamberlain & Chris Ellis state that the tractor was an International Harvester. Another source, "New Zealand Yesterdays" by Hamish Keith, printed in 1984 by Readers Digest Australia reports that a Caterpiller brand Cat DH-8 was used.

The PA-I was a prototype. Only 2 units were built in 1923. The left picture is the wooden mock up used for demonstration prior to production. The right most picture shows the only 2 units made leading a parade of PA-II vehicles in Milovice.

Si vede allora che George Lukas non ha abbastanza fantasia, perchè quello mi sembra praticamente identico allo STRUMTIGER tedesco,che operò in pochissimi esemplari nell'Italia settentrionale. Praticamente era un TIGER sul quale veniva montato un mortaio navale da 380mm, veniva usato soprattutto per la distruzione di edifici ma fu totalmente inutile visto che fu impiegato solo quando ormai la Germania stava nettamente perdendo la guerra e quindi non si riuscì per mancanza logistica a mantenere questi "mostri"

Si vede allora che George Lukas non ha abbastanza fantasia, perchè quello mi sembra praticamente identico allo STRUMTIGER tedesco,che operò in pochissimi esemplari nell'Italia settentrionale. Praticamente era un TIGER sul quale veniva montato un mortaio navale da 380mm, veniva usato soprattutto per la distruzione di edifici ma fu totalmente inutile visto che fu impiegato solo quando ormai la Germania stava nettamente perdendo la guerra e quindi non si riuscì per mancanza logistica a mantenere questi "mostri"

Fifteen units plus one prototype were produced in 1929. Three units were captured by Romania in 1939 during the final breakup of Czechoslovakia. The newly created state of Slovakia inherited three. The remainder were taken by Germany in 1938.

First produced in 1927, this improved verion featured a built in searchlight in the rear the the turret. Additional featured included dual controls with allowed the vehicle to be driven and steered on all four wheels. Self sealing tires were used.

Sul carro di leonardo ho visto un servizio in cui veniva costruito da zero da genieri inglesi.

 

Pensate che si muoveva a mano, nel senso che 4 uomini dovevano fare girare gli ingranaggi e il bello è che funzionava davvero!

hanno dovuto solo fare qualche piccola modifica al "sistema di trasmissione" !
