Difesa ABM USA

Difesa anti-missili USA ... potenziamento in vista ...

As fear of missiles from North Korea and Iran reaching U.S. soil heighten, Congress wants to ensure what is already on the ground at Fort Greely, Alaska, and Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, can defeat threats now and into the future.
The conference report of the fiscal year 2018 defense policy bill authorizes the defense secretary - subject to what is appropriated - to increase the number of ground-based interceptors by up to 28.
The 44th and final GBI - under the current requirement - for the GMD system was put in place at Fort Greely Nov. 2.

I politici vogliono la base ABM a Ravenna ... Ohio ...

The Ohio congressional delegation is doubling down on its efforts to lure a Missile Defense site to northeast Ohio.
In a letter (*) to Defense Secretary James Mattis dated Monday, Ohio’s two senators and all but one member of the Ohio House delegation urged the Trump administration to select Camp Ravenna as the East Coast Missile Defense site.
The letter was led by the state’s two senators as well as Reps. Bill Johnson, R-Marietta and Tim Ryan, D-Niles.
Only Rep. Mike Turner, a Dayton Republican who serves as a senior member of the House Armed Services Committee, did not sign - but Turner has separately called for the establishment of an East Coast Missile Defense site.
The letter touts Ravenna as an ideal location for the site, with members arguing that its location near transportation networks and its workforce make it an ideal location for the site, which would supplement other missile defense sites in Alaska and California.

Dopo due fallimenti consecutivi ...

Quote

The Pentagon intercepted a test ballistic missile with the Standard Missile-3 Block IIA system, the second time that weapon has been successfully tested - a relief for the department following two consecutive test failures.
The SM-3 Block IIA is a co-development between the U.S. and Japan, and is expected to be equipped on both the U.S. Aegis Ashore stations in Romania and Poland and the future Aegis Ashore stations in Japan - making it a keystone to America’s short- and intermediate-range missile defense strategies.

Il più grande fallimento è stato appena annunciato. Se entro 60gg la Russia non prenderà seriamente il trattato INF gli USA sono pronti a denuncialo.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/trump-administration-gives-russia-60-days-to-comply-with-inf-treaty-or-the-us-will-move-to-withdraw/2018/12/04/64c5bec2-f74a-11e8-8642-c9718a256cbd_story.html?utm_term=.0cd8aef78630

In a world where unmanned aerial vehicles are plentiful, cruise missiles are becoming more abundant, and hypersonic boost glide vehicles are just over the horizon, air and missile threats are coming from all directions.
To address the realities of this environment, effective defenses require an air and missile defense sensor architecture that looks in all directions as well.
To a great extent, however, the Pentagon is persisting in old habits of buying narrowly sectored radars - those that look in only one direction
Sectored ground-based radars are not only a mainstay of regional defenses like Patriot and the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD), but also comprise the majority of the sensors supporting the Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD) program for long-range missile defense (see Table 1).
This approach was good enough for the simple ballistic missile threats of the past, but not for the complex, multi-domain threats of the future.

Gli USA verso una nuova fase delle 'Guerre Stellari' di reaganiana memoria ?

The Defense Department will study the possibility of space weapons — perhaps particle beams, ray guns, space lasers, or orbiting missiles — that could intercept enemy missiles coming off the launch pad, according to a senior administration official who briefed reporters on the Missile Defense Review, due out on Thursday.
But the Pentagon will forgo actually developing them, for now.
It’s part of the Trump administration’s effort to “expand the scope of what we’re postured to defend against,” the official said.

On July 5, a Soyuz rocket blasted off from Vostochny Cosmodrome in the easternmost territory of Russia, carrying with it 33 satellites, including a polar-orbiting Meteor M2-2 weather satellite owned by the Russian government and a host of cubesats and nanosatellites launched on behalf of universities and commercial entities.
More than 3,500 miles away, the airmen of Thule Air Base in Greenland were watching, dispatching real-time reports to the Combined Space Operations Center, or CSpOC, at Vandenburg (*) Air Force Base, California.
Located on the northwestern coast of Greenland, Thule Air Base is the U.S. military’s northernmost base and the only installation north of the Arctic Circle.
It is home to the 12th Space Warning Squadron, a cadre of Air Force officers and enlisted personnel that provide 24/7 missile warning and space surveillance using a massive AN/FPS-132 radar.

Aegis Ashore ... il Giappone se ne va ...

Japan is backing away from installing two Aegis Ashore ballistic missile defense (BMD) systems in the country over technical concerns, Minster of Defense Taro Kono told reporters on Monday.
“In view of the cost and time [necessary] for the deployment, we will halt the process,” Kono told reporters, according to Kyodo News.
“For the time being, we’ll maintain our missile defense capability by Aegis-equipped destroyers.”

SM-3 Block IIA ... pronto per la produzione ...

Quote

The U.S. military considers the development of the Standard Missile 3 Block IIA ballistic missile interceptor to be complete and the weapon ready for production, even as co-developer Japan has changed its mind about using the interceptor as part of a shore-based ballistic missile defense site.
Japan had been set to build two Aegis Ashore BMD sites, one in the northern region of the country and one at the southern end.
Earlier this week, though, the Japanese government said it had changed its mind, citing concerns that the rocket booster on the SM-3 Block IIA interceptor wasn’t properly falling back to the ground in safe areas and could put civilian infrastructure or people at risk.

Un importante test di difesa ABM ...

Quote

The Navy and the Missile Defense Agency proved that an Aegis ballistic missile defense ship could effectively take down an intercontinental ballistic missile and serve as a backup to a ground-based homeland defense interceptor, the MDA announced on Tuesday.
FTM-44, mandated by Congress, pitted an ICBM target fired from Kwajalein Atoll against USS John Finn (DDG-113) firing the Standard Missile-3 Block IIA BMD interceptor during an early Tuesday morning test off Hawaii, the MDA announced.
Based on the preliminary data, the test was successful.
