  13. Second Italian Eurofighter Base Readies for Debut By TOM KINGTON ROME — The Italian Air Force will station Eurofighters at a second base Oct. 1 when it deploys four aircraft to Gioia del Colle in Puglia in southern Italy. Hangars and aprons are now being refurbished to host the Eurofighter component, which will reach full operational capability for air defense missions by January 2009 and grow to a squadron strength of about 15 aircraft by the end of 2009, said Col. Antonio Conserva, commander of Gioia del Colle’s 36th Wing. The Eurofighters will arrive from the Air Force’s 4th Wing at Grosseto, Italy’s first Eurofighter base, which currently boasts more than 20 aircraft. Five pilots set to be based at Gioia have already been trained at Grosseto, with a further three to follow by year’s end, added Conserva. Situated in the heel of Italy, Gioia del Colle currently hosts Tornado IDS ground-attack aircraft flown by the 156th Squadron. Those 15 aircraft will be transferred next year to Italy’s Ghedi base. “As part of a rationalization operation, Italy’s Tornados will be now grouped at two bases in northern Italy, Ghedi and Piacenza,” said Conserva. “The use of the Tornados during the Kosovo campaign gave Gioia real visibility, but the coming deployment of a new generation aircraft like the Eurofighter means a return to the spotlight.” In addition to ground-attack missions, air defense duties have been undertaken since the 1960s from Gioia by the 12th squadron, which flew F-104s and then Tornado ADV aircraft leased from the United Kingdom between 1995 and 2004, with 24 Tornados based at Gioia. Subsequently, the Aermacchi MB339 CD jet trainer has been deployed there to counter slow-moving threats such as light aircraft, although the MB339 is now being phased out at Gioia and only three to four are operational from the base, Conserva said. By the end of 2008, with the departure of the MC339s and the Tornado IDS aircraft, the 12th squadron’s new Eurofighters will be the only aircraft flying missions from Gioia, said Conserva. As their buildup continues, Italy’s leased F-16s based at Trapani in Sicily will continue to provide air defense. Air Force planners have chosen Gioia to ensure continued coverage of southern Italy, including Sicily, while Grosseto’s Eurofighters will cover northern Italy, with both overlapping Rome. The positioning reflects Italy’s decision to focus on the air defense capabilities of the Eurofighter over its ground-attack potential, a strategy confirmed by Air Force chief Vincenzo Camporini in July, who said Italy was not planning to mount air-to-ground weaponry on the aircraft. Like the Grosseto-based aircraft, the Block 2 Eurofighters heading for Gioia will be armed with Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles, AIM-9L missiles and the 27mm Mauser cannon. After the first four arrivals in October, Conserva said he expected another four in 2008 and six to eight aircraft a year from 2009 onward. At Grosseto, the Air Force this summer entered into service its initial Block 5 first-tranche Eurofighter aircraft, the first of five Block 5 aircraft to be delivered by the end of 2007 and which will complete deliveries of Italy’s 29 first-tranche Eurofighters. All Italy’s first-tranche aircraft will be upgraded to Block 5 standard, with the Passive Infra-Red Airborne Tracking Equipment, which combines forward-looking infrared with infrared search and track. Alenia officials say the type will also be able to use bombs such as the GBU-10, GBU-16 and Paveway II, although the Italian Air Force has no plans to buy those weapons. With the first Gioia squadron to be completed by the end of 2009, Conserva said aircraft would then be delivered to start a second squadron, with a third also a possibility. “Work on the infrastructure required to host the second squadron will start next year, with new hangars needed,” he said. The base’s head count will remain around 1,400, he added. Twenty staff from Finmeccanica unit Alenia Aeronautica, Italy’s industrial partner on the Eurofighter program, will also be based at Gioia as of Oct. 1. As more aircraft arrive, the base will also take delivery of a full mission simulator by the end of 2008, with a second to follow, and one enhanced cockpit trainer. “The simulators we have here now for Tornados will be upgraded to match the midlife upgrade the aircraft are undergoing and will be moved to Ghedi,” said Conserva. • defense news.com
