La FAA ha annunciato le nuove regole ...

Quote

The FAA took another step toward facilitating the development of civil supersonic aircraft with the release of a final rule today that clarifies procedures for obtaining special flight authorizations for flight testing beyond Mach 1.
Adopted largely as proposed in June 2019, the final rule outlines the information needed for applications of special flight authorization and designates the FAA program office that will process those applications.
It also creates a more “user-friendly” format, the agency said.
The rule further recognizes that supersonic flight testing could be used to gather noise data.
However, the rule does not lift the ban on supersonic flight over land.
Nor does it represent a policy change; instead, the rule streamlines and simplifies access to the various information necessary for special flight authorizations.

  • Carbon neutral emissions from the very first flight onwards.
  • 100 million trees planted by 2036.
  • Aircraft run on 100% sustainable aviation fuels (leading to an 80% net carbon reduction).
  • Extensive carbon offsetting program at no cost to customers.
  • Reduction in noise pollution through “boomless” supersonic flight.

Ma come andrà? Riflessioni...

Quote

Aerion is taking the next step in its quest for a family of supersonic jets, revealing on Monday the initial details for its second aircraft - the 50-passenger, Mach 4-plus AS3.
Fuller details of the airliner companion to its AS2 Mach 1.4 business jet are anticipated later this year, Aerion said, but sketched out a goal of reaching near-hypersonic speeds and a 7,000-nm range for the AS3.
The aircraft is anticipated to fly before the end of the decade, the company projected, adding that it will build on the AS2 that is anticipated to be in service by then.

Da Mach 4 a Mach 0 ... :pianto:

Quote

Supersonic aircraft developer Aerion Corp. on May 21 confirmed that it is ceasing operations of its AS2 business jet program after years of development, citing difficulty in raising the capital needed to complete production.
Employees were told of the development the same day.
The $120 million, planned Mach 1.4 AS2, scheduled for initial production in 2023 and first flight in 2024, counts Boeing and Spirit Aerosystems as investors and has been in development by Reno, Nevada-based Aerion for a decade.
The company had plans to invest $300 million to build a final assembly facility in Melbourne, Florida, and in March landed a commitment from NetJets for up to 20 AS2s.

La scelta di United Airlines  ...

Quote

United Airlines said Thursday that it has reached a so-called commercial agreement with Boom Supersonic to order 15 Overture supersonic jets “once Overture meets United's demanding safety, operating, and sustainability requirements.”
The agreement also specifies options on another 35 airplanes.
Boom plans to fly a demonstrator of its supersonic concept sometime this year as it looks toward a rollout of a full-scale example in 2025 and entry into service in 2029.
Powered by three General Electric J85-15 turbojets, the composite-bodied XB-1 will fly up to Mach 2.2 ahead of the planned introduction of the 65- to 88-seat Overture.
Boom staged an online rollout ceremony for its one-third-scale XB-1 demonstrator last October and in March announced a “strategic investment” from American Express Ventures.

Quote

Russia’s aerospace industry is delaying a full-scale launch of a second-generation supersonic transport aircraft (SST2) while intensifying efforts to work out key technologies needed to deliver on that ambition.
The change in course was confirmed in a high-level government meeting last month when President Vladimir Putin himself approved a proposal by state-backed companies to develop the new Strizh (Swift) supersonic technology demonstrator to be powered by Klimov RD-93MA turbofans (a no-afterburning derivative of the MiG-35 fighter engine).
With a takeoff weight of 16 tonnes (35,273 pounds), the Strizh would serve as a platform to evaluate a package of new technologies such as pro-bionic structural airframe design (instead of classic frames and ribs) and engineering advances on engine/airframe integration to deliver a lower noise footprint around airports.
Having completed wind-tunnel and hot-gas testing on scaled models, the industry now awaits a government response to its proposal to build the 125-foot-long vehicle able to accelerate to speeds of up to Mach 1.8.
If Kremlin funding materializes in a timely manner, construction and flight testing would take place between 2022 and 2026.

La European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) interviene sulle normative sui jet supersonici civili ...

Cita

EASA has undertaken two rulemaking actions to develop environmental safeguards for the new generation of business jets and airline supersonic transports (SSTs) that are expected to become operational in the late 2020s.
An EASA advance notice of proposed amendment (A-NPA) aims to ensure that certified landing and takeoff noise limits for SSTs correspond to existing EASA requirements for subsonic jet airplanes.
Initial requirements for CO2 limits for SSTs are also being proposed.
Currently, no ICAO standards or recommended practices exist for SST noise limits.
Comments on the A-NPA are due July 25.

Cita

Supersonic airliner developer Boom has unveiled the refined configuration of its Mach 1.7 Overture passenger design and, at the same time, announced a partnership with Northrop Grumman to study military versions.
The significantly revised Overture design is tailored to meet Boom’s 4,250-nm range, high-speed mission requirement with 65-80 passenger, while simultaneously meeting stringent International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)  Chapter 14/FAA Stage 5 takeoff-and-landing noise limits.
Reminiscent of supersonic concepts studied by Boeing and McDonnell Douglas in the late 1980s under NASA’s High Speed Civil Transport project, the new design features a horizontal tail and four wing-mounted engines, replacing the trijet arrangement of the earlier concept.
By increasing the number of engines, Boom says the Overture will be capable of takeoff at derated thrust settings, helping reduce noise.
Mounted in individual nacelles, the nonafterburning engines are staggered along the trailing edge of a large delta wing, which replaces the slender ogive design of the previous Concorde-like iteration.
The new wing is gulled in profile and incorporates what appears to be a sharper trailing edge sweep angle inboard with a reduced sweep outboard.
The revised wing is designed to provide improved lateral stability as well as additional lift at subsonic conditions without compromising supersonic cruise performance - enabling transonic overland flight close to Mach 1 and long-range overwater flights at Mach 1.7.
The engine arrangement also reduces aerodynamic interference drag while providing space for high-lift trailing edge devices.
The aft location also complies with positioning rules for modern turbine rotor burst safety regulations and places the engines aft of the cabin pressure bulkhead.

Cita

Boom Supersonic announced that it has formed a team of engine designers, an additive manufacturer, and a turbine engine maintenance specialist to help develop the new Symphony engine that will power its Overture supersonic airliner.
However, the U.S. start-up, which to date has not been able to persuade any of the major aircraft engine makers to join its ambitious program, did not identify which company will manufacture the Symphony engine nor where it will be made.
The new engine will produce 35,000 pounds of takeoff thrust and features a twin-spool architecture with a single-stage fan and a passively cooled high-pressure turbine using traditional hot-section materials. The medium-bypass-ratio engine will not be equipped with an afterburner.
Boom is targeting the rollout of the Mach 1.7, four-engine Overture in 2024 at its Greensboro, North Carolina, factory followed by first flight in 2027 and type certification in 2029.
Certification of the Symphony engine will be under FAA and EASA Part 33 regulations.
