Armadillo Makes Second Successful NGLLC Flight

Armadillo Aerospace made two flights of its lunar lander prototype today, putting it in the lead position to capture the Northrop Grumman Lunar Lander Challenge. (View a team photo taken after the successful flights.)

The Mesquite, Texas-based company completed two test flights in one day from a test facility in Caddo Mills, TX, to satisfy requirements for Level 2 of the prize. The second level requires the rocket to fly for 180 seconds before landing precisely on a simulated lunar surface constructed with craters and boulders.

The winner of Level 2 will be awarded $1 million, with a $500,000 award for second place. Last year, Armadillo won $350,000 for successfully completing Level 1 of the prize. There remains a $150,000 prize for second place on Level 1 that has not been claimed yet.

There will be two additional attempts by competing companies during the next six weeks:

    * Masten Space Systems will make flight attempts on September 15-16 (Level 1), October 7-8 (Level 2), and October 28-29 (Level 2).

    * Unreasonable Rocket will attempt both Level 1 and Level 2 flights on Oct 30-31.

Previously, the challenge was held in one weekend annually in New Mexico where the teams brought their landers. For financial reasons, teams allowed to attempt flights from their own home bases during a launch window that runs through the end of October.

At the end of the window, any teams that have accomplished the mission will be ranked based on the landing accuracy achieved in each of their rocket powered flights, and the prize purses will be awarded accordingly.

  5. Bunker Africano è stato chiuso :censura::incazz::furioso:.

TEHRAN, Iran – President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Tuesday that Iran is stronger than ever and warned that its military will "cut the hand" of anyone who attacks. But a military parade where he spoke was marred when an air force plane crashed, killing seven people, according to state radio.

State TV showed video footage of burning wreckage from the military plane surrounded by fire trucks in farmlands south of Tehran.

There was not immediate word on the cause of the crash, but the Iranian military — as well its civilian airlines — have been plagued by lethal accidents. The crashes are blamed in part on U.S. sanctions that make it difficult for Iran to get spare parts, but experts have also said airlines are strapped for cash and often have poor maintenance.

State radio and television did not specify the type of plane that crashed, saying only it was used for transport. The air force show Tuesday included U.S.-made jet fighters and bombers acquired by Iran before its 1979 Islamic Revolution, as well as more recently acquired Russian aircraft and Iran's domestically built fighter, known as the Saeqeh, or Thunderbolt.

The airshow was part of a military parade held on Tehran's southern outskirts showing off anti-missile and anti-aircraft systems that Iran bought from Russia in 2007 to protect its nuclear facilities as well as Iran's array of missiles capable of striking Israel, the Mideast and parts of Eastern Europe. The parade marked the anniversary of the start of the 1980-1988 Iraq-Iran war in which an estimated 1 million people were killed.

Iran's military readiness is such that "no power dares imagine an invasion against Iran," Ahmadinejad said in a speech at the parade. "The Iranian nation will resist all invaders."

"Our armed forces will cut the hand of anyone in the world before it pulls the trigger against the Iranian nation," he said.

The remark reflects Tehran's concerns that Israel or the United States could target it in an attempt to take out its nuclear facilities. The U.S. and its allies accuse Iran of secretly seeking to build nuclear weapons, but Tehran denies the charge and says it's for peaceful purposes only.

On Monday, Iran's archenemy Israel repeated its stance that it is keeping "all options on the table" to prevent Tehran from building a nuclear weapon, including military action.

Ahmadinejad is preparing to appear Wednesday at the U.N. General Assembly, where he is expected to come under heavy pressure over the nuclear issue. Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will boycott that speech, Israeli officials said Tuesday, adding they hoped other world leaders would do the same.

Iran is also poised to enter key negotiations with the United States and other powers seeking concessions on Iran's nuclear program on Oct. 1. The U.S. and its allies suspect Tehran already has enough enriched uranium to build a bomb but Iran says the uranium is for generating electricity.

Tuesday's parade speech was also meant to underline Ahmadinejad's strength in the face of a three-month domestic turmoil in which the pro-reform opposition has staged dramatic protests claiming Ahmadinejad's victory in June presidential elections was fraudulent.

Former President Bill Clinton said Tuesday that Ahmadinejad is "lashing out at the world" right now, possibly because of the international criticism after his violence-marred re-election. Appearing on NBC's "Today" show, Clinton said the question remains "whether this is a strategy in play and whether we can find some way" to engage the Iranian leader.

Last week, Ahmadinejad taunted Israel, questioning whether the Holocaust was "a real event" and calling it a pretext used by Jews to trick the West into backing the creation of Israel. On Monday, he said he was proud the remark stoked international outrage.

At the parade, Ahmadinejad lashed out at the "presence of foreign forces in the region" and said it was "unacceptable that some deploy troops to the region from thousands of kilometers (miles) away." Iran sees the U.S forces in neighboring Iraq and Afghanistan as a threat.

He accused foreign powers of creating rifts among Mideast countries while saying Iran seeks to promote brotherhood and peaceful coexistence of all nations.

In Geneva on Tuesday, U.S. diplomat Douglas M. Griffiths criticized Tehran before the 47-nation U.N. Human Rights Council, saying the "Iranian government harshly repressed its people's right to freedom of assembly and expression, resulting in scores of deaths of protesters as well as hundreds of arrests" in the post-election clampdown.

Iranian opposition groups say at least 72 protesters were killed in the violence that followed the balloting. Government officials maintain that only 36 people died in the unrest.

Iran has ramped up its domestic weapons production in recent years and claims to export military equipment to more than 50 countries.

Tuesday's parade for the first time displayed the Russian-made Tor-M1 air-defense system meant to defend Iran's nuclear facilities against airstrikes.

The Tor-M1 can hit aerial targets flying at up to 20,000 feet. Russia delivered the system to Iran in early 2007. The two countries are now discussing the delivery of a newer version of the S-300 anti-aircraft missile defense system that is capable of shooting down aircraft, cruise missiles and ballistic missile warheads at ranges of over 90 miles and at altitudes of about 90,000 feet.

The parade — held on the grounds next to the cemetery in southern Tehran where thousands of fallen Iranian soldiers from the war with Iraq are buried — showed off various types of Iranian missiles, including the Shahab-3 and Sejjil, with a range of 1,250 miles (2,000 kilometers) and 1,200 miles (1,900 kilometers).

Russia to Modernise and Train Cuban Military

Russia is willing to help modernise and train the Cuban military as part of the Russian-Cuban military cooperation, according to chief of the Russian military general staff Nikolai Makarov during a visit to Cuba.

According to Makarov, the focus of cooperation would be to refurbish and replace Soviet-made military equipment that had been delivered to Cuba during the Soviet era. Reports Rianovosti.

"We inspected the condition of this equipment, and outlined the measures to be taken to maintain the defence capability of this country. I hope we will be able to accomplish this task," he said.

The general also indicated that a Cuban request for assistance with training of military personnel would also be fully satisfied.

Diplomatic ties between Cuba and Russia have strengthened recently following the visit of council chief Nikolai Patrushev and Russian Deputy Prime Minister Igor Sechin to Cuba in July last year.

A group of Russian warships, led by the Admiral Chabanenko destroyer also visited Cuba in December 2008.

    all'Italia la prosperità.

    offerto a Te, o Dio,

padrone della vita e della morte. Amen

Vorrei citare anche l'invocazione del Ten. Col. P.C.

  9. The Oshkosh MRAP (mine-resistant ambush-protected) all-terrain vehicle (M-ATV) is an armoured vehicle with improved mobility. In June 2009, Oshkosh Corporation received an initial order to deliver 2,900 M-ATVs to the US Armed Forces for deployment in Afghanistan.

The M-ATV is based on the medium tactical vehicle replacement (MTVR) platform and is fitted with patented TAK-4 independent suspension system for utmost mobility and survivability.

The US Army has selected Oshkosh M-ATV out of five participant models, which included two by BAE Systems and one each by Navistar and Force Dynamics.

Oshkosh will recruit 300 to 500 new employees and recall 550 to 650 employees to deliver the orders by February 2010

    M-ATV missions

The US armed forces need 2,080 to 10,000 M-ATVs to deploy them in Afghanistan's rough and mountainous off-road environments and dispersed combat operations. The orders were placed for a few demonstration vehicles for testing.

In May 2009, three demonstration Oshkosh M-ATVs arrived at the US Army's Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, for military evaluation. These vehicles were mainly developed for the US armed forces to resume rugged-terrain operations in Afghanistan. The armour system and the suspension system mounted in Oshkosh M-ATV have already been implemented in 5,000 current MRAPs and about 10,000 MTVRs.

In June 2009, Oshkosh Defense, a division of Oshkosh Corporation completed the targeted 10,000 miles of on and off-road testing of the M-ATV at the Nevada Automotive Test Centre. Oshkosh also finished 7,500 miles of self evaluation on the vehicle's durability to operate on Afghanistan's tough terrain.

    Orders and deliveries

Following many months of testing the US Department of Defense (DoD) has selected Oshkosh for the supply of M-ATVs for its armed forces. The initial order to supply 2,244 M-ATVs is valued at $1.05bn. The vehicles will be used by the US Army Tank-Automotive and Armaments Command Life Cycle Management Command (TACOM LCMC).

In July 2009, Oshkosh received an additional order for 1,700 M-ATVs worth $1.06bn from TACOM LCMC. Under the contract, Oshkosh will also supply after-market parts packages until April 2010 and field support services to the US armed forces.

The deliveries are expected to be completed by February 2010. By July 2009, Oshkosh had supplied 46 M-ATVs exceeding its first delivery target to 45.
