Israeli rocket defence technology in US service?

Israeli-US cooperation in the development of rocket and ballistic missile interceptors is moving a step forward.

Raytheon will soon begin to manufacture components for the Israel-developed “Iron Dome” rocket interceptor.

This will allow Israel to purchase more interceptors using US foreign military funds (FMF), the annual defence grant that Israel gets from Washington.

Raytheon is deeply involved in the development of a three-tiered anti-rocket/ballistic missile shield that will protect Israel.

Israel faces threats from a record number of rockets and missiles hidden in Lebanon and the Gaza strip – and it wants to make clear that if these are launched in massive salvos, the reaction will be aggressive.

Rafael is developing a high-energy, laser-based weapon system to supplement its Iron Dome Counter Rocket, Artillery and Mortar (C-RAM) system, offering a more affordable method to engage salvos of rockets and mortars fired at short range.

“The Iron Beam weapon system enables delivery of scalable levels of energy at tactical and strategic distances while generating entirely new effects in the battlefield,” a Rafael official told Aviation Week.

The new weapon system also will be able to defeat enemy unmanned aerial vehicles while avoiding damage to friendly aircraft and UAVs.

Although it seems like the "Iron Dome" system has always been a part of the protection of the residents of Israel, today actually marks only three years since its first interception.

Since then, the system has recorded hundreds of interceptions, been deployed around the country and boosted drafting percentages.

sono critiche basate su nulla o quasi. L'Iron Dome sicuramente non riesce a discriminare tra razzi carichi e razzi inerti su traiettoria pericolosa (d'altronde nessuno ci riesce) ed è piuttosto dispendioso, ma nessuno ha mai pensato ai soldi che ci vorebbero per le vittime e per ricostruire, in caso di sua mancanza.
