La NASA è tuttora in 'animazione sospesa' .... http://notice.usa.gov/ .... ma, nonostante ciò, rimane in grado di fornire ancora qualche segno di vita ....

NASA in suspended animation but signs of life persist ....

NASA, the world’s largest and best-funded space agency, has furloughed 97% of its 18,000-strong workforce because of the US government shutdown.

The furlough has largely put on hold all but those programmes deemed essential.

Antarctic Ozone Hole Slightly Smaller than Average This Year ....

The ozone hole that forms each year in the stratosphere over Antarctica was slightly smaller in 2013 than average in recent decades, according to NASA satellite data.

The ozone hole is a seasonal phenomenon that starts to form during the Antarctic spring (August and September).

The September-October 2013 average size of the hole was 8.1 million square miles (21 million square kilometers).

For comparison, the average size measured since the mid-1990s when the annual maximum size stopped growing is 8.7 million square miles (22.5 million square kilometers).

However, the size of the hole in any particular year is not enough information for scientists to determine whether a healing of the hole has begun.

Obama Administration Extends International Space Station Until at Least 2024 ....

As more than 30 heads of space agencies from around the world prepare to gather in Washington January 9-10 for an unprecedented summit on the future of space exploration, we are pleased to announce that the Obama Administration has approved an extension of the International Space Station (ISS) until at least 2024.

We are hopeful and optimistic that our ISS partners will join this extension effort and thus enable continuation of the groundbreaking research being conducted in this unique orbiting laboratory for at least another decade.

A Portrait of Global Winds ....

High-resolution global atmospheric modeling provides a unique tool to study the role of weather within Earth’s climate system.
NASA’s Goddard Earth Observing System Model (GEOS-5) is capable of simulating worldwide weather at resolutions as fine as 3.5 kilometers.
This visualization shows global winds from a GEOS-5 simulation using 10-kilometer resolution.
Surface winds (0 to 40 meters/second) are shown in white and trace features including Atlantic and Pacific cyclones.
Upper-level winds (250 hectopascals) are colored by speed (0 to 175 meters/second), with red indicating faster.
This simulation ran on the Discover supercomputer at the NASA Center for Climate Simulation.
The complete 2-year “Nature Run” simulation—a computer model representation of Earth's atmosphere from basic inputs including observed sea-surface temperatures and surface emissions from biomass burning, volcanoes and anthropogenic sources—produces its own unique weather patterns including precipitation, aerosols and hurricanes.
A follow-on Nature Run is simulating Earth’s atmosphere at 7 kilometers for 2 years and 3.5 kilometers for 3 months.

Space Communications Antenna Supported Early NASA Missions ....

2w4kw3a.jpg

This 26 meter (85 foot) antenna operated in Woomera (Island Lagoon), Australia at Deep Space Station (DSS) 41, established in August 1960.

The Island Lagoon site was the first deep space station to be established outside the United States and the first Australian antenna NASA built.

The station was operated by the Australian Department of Supply and helped support the Ranger and early Mariner missions, as well as communications from the Deep Space Network (DSN) complex in Goldstone, California via a moon bounce.

Woomera’s antenna ceased operations in 1972.

Today, the Deep Space Network -- consisting of three sites in Goldstone, California; Madrid, Spain; and Canberra, Australia -- supports space communications for NASA and non-NASA missions that explore the furthest points of our solar system.

Each complex currently has a 70 meter (230 foot) antenna, one 34 meter (111 foot) High Efficiency (HEF) antenna, and one or more 34 meter Beam Wave Guide (BWG) antenna.

The Deep Space Network is operated 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days per year.

To support future mission needs, construction is currently underway in Canberra, Australia to add two new 34 meter BWG antennas, Deep Space Station 35 (DSS-35) and DSS-36 by 2018.
