Desert trial for ESA Mars rover ....

Next week will see ESA’s most ambitious planetary rover test yet. Robotic exploration of a Mars-like desert in South America will be overseen from the UK, providing experience for future missions to the Red Planet.

The rover faces the desolate Atacama Desert in northern Chile, one of the closest terrestrial matches for Mars. Among the driest places on Earth, it lacks any vegetation and its red–brown soil and rocks make it look even more like Mars.

L'aurora boreale
L'ultima volta AstroLuca aveva fotografato l'aurora boreale.

ESA rover completes exploring Mars-like desert ....

Braving high winds, dust devils and unpredictable terrain, ESA’s test rover has completed its exploration across – and under – Chile’s Mars-like Atacama Desert.

The five-day Sample Acquisition Field Experiment with a Rover, or SAFER, field trial concluded on Saturday 12 October.

Mars cars need to be self-drivers ....

.... it is absolutely critical that Bridget’s successor be able to navigate autonomously.

There is no GPS on Mars, where communication will be routed via an orbiter that has just one or two short windows daily to pass signals to and from the rover.

And, even at the speed of light, radio signals take tens of minutes to reach Mars – so there is no prospect of safely driving the rover from Earth except in painfully short steps that would severely limit its range during a mission with a seven-month design life.

A US-European agreement to develop spaceplane technology may extend the remit of Sierra Nevada’s in-development Dream Chaser beyond its planned use by NASA to shuttle astronauts to and from the International Space Station.

Sierra Nevada, the European Space Agency and Germany’s DLR aerospace agency have agreed to jointly evaluate technologies such as those being developed for ESA’s IXV (Intermediate eXperimental Vehicle) re-entry vehicle concept for the runway-landing Dream Chaser or other variants; launch by Ariane 5 will also be studied.

USAF Beat IXV By Decades .....

A recent item in the First Take section (AW&ST Feb. 16-March 1, p. 13) states that the successful flight of the IXV meant that “Europe was first to send a lifting body into space . . . .”

You are wrong by nearly 50 years.

The U.S. Air Force SV-5D (X-23) Prime (Precision Recovery Including Maneuvering Entry) program successfully flew unmanned lifting bodies in space in 1966-67.

The third vehicle was recovered after its flight and is housed at the Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio.

The even earlier Asset (Aerothermodynamic Elastic Structural Systems Environmental Tests) program flew lifting-body-like vehicles into space in 1961, although that design could be said to have had stubby wings, rather than being a pure lifting body like Prime.

While I applaud the IXV program and am thrilled to see a program that is using actual flight tests to measure its design against the real world, let’s keep the proper “first” credit where it is due.

Europe’s bid to retain independent, cost-competitive access to space in a launch market disrupted by US start-up SpaceX has been given solid financial momentum with formal contracts to develop the heavyweight Ariane 6 and light Vega C rockets.

The €2.4 billion ($2.7 billion) contract for the two variants of the modular Ariane 6, to fly from 2020 with full operations from 2023, includes some €680 million to reach a preliminary design review in mid-2016.

Prime contractor Airbus Safran Launchers says the total cost of developing the launcher, including solid fuel boosters to be shared with Vega C and some €400 million in industrial investment, will be about €3 billion.
