Secondo le ultime osservazioni della NASA il terremoto e il conseguente tsunami del marzo 2011, hanno devastato non solo larghe aree del Giappone, ma anche diversi Iceberg in Antartide. Le immagini rivelano nuovi iceberg creati dopo che lo tsunami ha colpito la lastra di ghiaccio Sulzberger (Sulzberger Ice Shelf). Le immagini radar acquisite dal satellite Envisat dell’ESA mostrano come l'iceberg distrutto misura circa 6.5km x 9.5km sulla superficie, per circa 80m di spessore.
