  1. Navy Carrier Jets 'Can't Land In Hot Weather' http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2013/may/10/navy-jets-cant-land-hot-weather "The hi-tech jets that will be flown from the Royal Navy's two new aircraft carriers cannot land on the ships in "hot, humid and low pressure weather conditions", a report warns today." Una notizia di ieri riguardo il Tornado: First upgraded Tornado ECR delivered to Italian Air Force http://www.flightglobal.com/blogs/aircraft-pictures//2013/05/italy-takes-first-upgraded-tor.html e per gli AMX ... the (upgrade) programme is estimated to have extended the lifespan of the fleet beyond 2027... L'Italia non potra mai guadagnarci dal programma F35 per due ovvi motivi, che sono correlati: 1) la riduzione e l'abbandono degli ordini sinora da parte del Canada, Danimarca, UK, e Olanda 2) il prezzo reale dei velivoli: Israel- 75 aircraft (if all options taken) for $15.2B - Acquisition price each: $202.6M Japan- 42 aircraft (if all options taken) for $10B - Aquisition price each: $238M S.Korea 60 aircraft for $10.8B - Acquistion price each $180M L'Alenia Aermacchi ci ha gia rimesso per il programma 787 lo scorso anno, ed il 787 e' un programma perfetto rispetto alle problematiche del F35.
Anche se secondo il Generale Chuck Year it's a waste of money. https://twitter.com/modestholdings/status/329296095761035265 .
Il Naval Typhoon e' stato promosso dalla BAE per l'India nel quadro del programma MMRCA: http://www.defencenow.com/news/258/india-is-offered-to-become-a-partner-in-creating-naval-variant-of-typhoon-if-eads-wins-mmrca-deal.html India is offered to become a Partner in Creating Naval Variant of Typhoon if EADS Wins MMRCA Deal http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eurofighter_Typhoon_variants#Navalised_Eurofighter In February 2011, BAE debuted a navalised Typhoon in response to the Indian tender. The model offered is STOBAR (Short Take Off But Arrested Recovery) capable, corresponding to the Indian Navy's future Vikrant class aircraft carrier. The changes needed to enable the Typhoon to launch by ski-jump and recover by arrestor hook added about 500 kg to the airframe. Il Project Zero non e' solo elettrico: http://www.agustawestland.com/node/6902 Ansaldo Energia specializes in manufacturing megawatts power generators has provided valuable expertise on the alternative hybrid electric-diesel solution. ... The entire aircraft uses no hydraulics; the retractable landing gear, nacelle tilting mechanism, and elevons are controlled by EMA. ORAL Engineering developed an efficient diesel engine for the alternative electric-hybrid propulsion solution and provided rapid CNC machining for the rotor and drive system.
  4. RAF joins F35 Program's war on semantics (dal sito defense-aerospace.com) The first solo flight of the F-35B Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) by a UK operational pilot has taken place in the United States. http://www.defense-aerospace.com/article-view/release/143718/raf-joins-f_35-program%E2%80%99s-war-on-semantics.html (EDITOR’S NOTE: 1. In the above press release, the RAF appears to have invented a new, original definition of the term “operational sortie”: apparently, it no longer means, as grammar and common sense dictate, a sortie made on an operational mission, as opposed to development, training or maintenance check-out missions. Instead, in the above press release, the term is used to describe a sortie during which the aircraft is piloted by an operational pilot. This is a considerable departure from accepted usage of the term, but it not the first instance of how backers of the F-35 are resorting to creative semantics. 2. A similar language deviation was recently used by the F-35 Joint Program Office, when on Feb. 21 it issued a press release titled “Corps’ First Operational F-35B Takes to Yuma Skies.” While this headline clearly implies that the F-35B has achieved operational status in the Marine Corps, this is far from the truth, as the F-35B will not attain Initial Operational Capability until 2015 at the earliest. (The US Air Force version of the F-35, which is to be bought by the RAF, will not attain IOC until 2019; Group Captain Harv Smyth’s claim, in the above release, of an IOC in 2018 is, at best, a mistake.) Instead, as becomes clearer further into the story, the term “First Operational F-35B” as used in the headline actually refers to the “squadron’s first orientation flight,” which itself “signifies the beginning of a new era of flight operations for the Marine Corps.” So, an “orientation flight” becomes the “Corps’ First Operational F-35B Takes to Yuma Skies”? Is this error due to an inexperienced hack, or to something more sinister? 3. A third instance of the semantically dubious use of the term “operational” is a Marine Corps press release dated March 21, and titled “Corps' First Operational F-35B Conducts First Vertical Landing.” In this case, the term “operational” is used to mean “outside of a testing environment,” as the release itself clarifies twice in the lead paragraphs. ... While it may not convince the skeptical or the knowledgeable, the F-35’s war on semantics can certainly be effective in creating the impression of progress among the inattentive and the naïve, which are clearly a large majority in the media and the public. In a recent piece (Jet Fighter Influence: How Lockheed’s Public Relations Efforts Keep the F-35 Sold), journalist David Axe looked at Lockheed Martin’s efforts to save the program that will generate a good share of its profits for the next 50 years. It is somewhat sad to see the military services of the United States and United Kingdom resorting to similarly devious P.R. techniques.
The latest in a series of upgrades will allow Italian Tornados to carry the small-diameter bomb (SDB) and the advanced anti-radiation guided missile (AARGM). Known as MET Contract Annex 27, the new contract will run for 36 months and will cover integration of the weapons into a common software load and flight test. Industrial activity has already begun; the team hopes to have both weapons in service by December 2015. After RET 8 is complete the Italian air force will operate 58 updated Tornados, which it anticipates flying until at least 2025. The service originally acquired 99 aircraft and currently operates 62 IDS machines and 16 ECRs. Analogamente per i AMX: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AMX_International_AMX In August 2007, Embraer began a major midlife upgrade programme and modernisation of 53 Brazilian Air Force AMX A-1s, focusing on avionics systems and new armament additions; the programme is estimated to have extended the lifespan of the fleet beyond 2027. L'aggiornamento in Italia e' stato avviato due anni prima (2005) rispetto al Brasile (2007) In 2005, the Italian Air Force launched an upgrade programme (ACOL Aggionamento Capacità Operative e Logistiche – Operational and Logistical Capability Upgrade) for 55 of its AMXs,[17] adding a new laser INS, new cockpit displays and allowing the aircraft to drop Joint Direct Attack Munition guided bombs. Quindi magari si potrebbe pensare anche ad un aggiornamento analogo per i Harrier (extend the lifespan to 2030+)
While negotiations are on between the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and Dassault Aviation, it must be noted that the French aircraft company's commercial bid comes to an end on 31 March 2013. If a decision is not made by this time, the old bid will not be considered and a fresh revised bid will be called for. http://in.reuter$.com/article/2013/03/07/india-election-political-risks-idINDEE92604920130307 India is currently in exclusive talks with France's Dassault for those jets. The defence ministry says it is too early to say if there are any problems with that deal, and expects to finalise negotiations this year. If the deal were for any reason scrapped, a new tender would likely have to be issued. Number two contender, the Eurofighter consortium, could possibly enter exclusive talks with India if Dassault fails to reach a price agreement with the government. The "Project Zero" technology demonstrator was designed, built and tested in twelve months. (e anche cosi mi sembran pochi). http://www.agustawestland.com/node/6902 http://www.gizmag.com/project-zero-electric-tilt-rotor-aircraft/26561/ "Additionally, because Project Zero’s electric motors don’t require oxygen in order to operate, the aircraft could conceivably fly at very high altitudes or in heavily-polluted air. It should also be difficult to detect, as it makes little noise and has a low thermal signature while in flight.." E con il F35 da qui al 2020 saranno sempre e comunque beghe (and not very cheap beghe either)..... quindi ci sarebbe da aspettarsi una entrata in serrvizio (funzionante) molto prima del fatidico F35.
  7. Secondo defense-aerospace http://www.defense-aerospace.com/articles-view/release/3/143675/dutch-likely-to-cut-f_35-order-by-up-to-one_third.html inoltre il taglio sarebbe ancor piu drammatico: The budget currently available for the new fighter procurement is € 4.5 billion, but this includes 21% Value-Added Tax, meaning that the air force’s real purchasing power is of only € 3.72 billion, which in the best of conditions might buy fewer than 35 F-35s. Per capire in the best of conditions, basti pensare al Giappone e Korea del Sud. Giappone April 30 The Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified Congress of a possible Foreign Military Sale to the Government of Japan for a possible sale of an initial four F-35 Joint Strike Fighter Conventional Take - Off and Landing (CTOL) aircraft with an option to purchase an additional 38 F-35 CTOL aircraft. The estimated cost is $10 billion. (costo dei motori questa volta inclusi....diamine, qui ci voleva Toto'...) http://www.dsca.mil/pressreleases/36-b/2012/Japan_12-15.pdf Korea del Sud Lockheed quoted $14.2 billion for 60 F-35s in the Korean F-X contest(A direct importation deal), and was virtually eliminated because the quoted price exceeded the legal ceiling by 50%. Come? Mean Flight Hours Between Critical Failures (a typical measure of reliability) occurred every four hours, on average-well short of the expected 11 hours at this stage of the F-35's development-and well below the aircraft's ultimate goal of a modest 20 hours. (p. 34) The F-35As at Eglin also failed reliability goals for this stage of development: a major problem was the poor reliability of the complicated, badly performing helmet. (p. 34) Similar problems occurred on the maintenance time the aircraft required. (pp. 36, 37) For example, the mean elapsed time for an engine removal and installation was 52 hours; the system threshold is 120 minutes. (p. 37) http://pogoarchives.org/straus/ote-info-memo-20130215.pdf JSFNieuws ha inoltre un articolo molto interessante What the Lubbock Emergency landing of a F-35 shows…….. http://www.jsfnieuws.nl/?p=984 Eight days after the emergency landing On March 19, 2013 Reuters US reported: “Aside from one night in a fenced area, the plane has been kept in a guarded hangar at the airport, according to airport officials.” But no word about the misleading statement of March 11 of the airport official James Loomis that “the plane took-off for Nevada at 05:30 pm”. Las Vegas Review Journal told this story March 19, 2013 at 7:56 pm: “Three of the $67 million jets landed at the base earlier this month, and a fourth was cleared to fly Tuesday from Lubbock, Texas, where it made a precautionary landing March 11. It was on its way to Nellis from Lockheed Martin’s production plant in Fort Worth, Texas. “There was a wire connector issue in the flight control system, but the pilot was never in danger,” Lockheed spokesman Michael Rein said. He said the plane has a triple redundant backup system for flight control. “We fixed it, powered up the airplane, and everything checked out”.” And one day later the newsitem was updated. We can read in the newsstory: “The plane had not arrived at Nellis late Tuesday.” Removal of the official Press Release and website topics Last Friday March 22, 2013 the press release of March 14, 2013 with the “Status and Fast Facts” had been removed from all official F-35 websites (L-M, JPO, F-35 Canada, etc.). It not only contained inconvenient facts about the Lubbock Emergency landing, but also, it is clear that the test flight program is far behind schedule with only about 140 flights performed until March 12, 2013 (out of a total of 210 planned flights). See: this publication of the status report by JSFNieuws. No good news. Saturday March 23, 2013 several weblogs were asked to remove the PDF and some critical statements of persons who had read the PDF. One exemple: at the website F16-net (F35-newsforum) the main topics “program documents”, the sub topic “Lubbock Emergency landing” and a main topic about “first fligts/test progress” were removed. Why? What does the Lubbock Emergency landing show? That we need independent news websites, bringing the facts – positive and negative. And, what really happened during the Lubbock Emergency Landing? The question for Denmark and other smaller NATO nations is a simple one: do they want an air force, or do they want F-35? 8.
Also the operating and support cost will affect the entire defense budget over 30-40 years ahead.
Does the UK need stealth in their carrier-borne strike aircraft? It's only a benefit in a first-day scenario, where you want to get in, do a bit of undetected interdiction, and bugger off again. What war will we, as the UK, go into where a) we'd need stealth to avoid an advanced radar-lain defence system and b) won't have our mates' B-2s and F-22s at our disposal to do just that. That's ignoring the fact that at some point we'll have something like Taranis to do that kind of work for ourselves." In questo caso per il UK (Level 1 partner) si tratta solo di affermazioni in un blog, ma nel caso dell'Olanda si tratta dell'opinione del Clingendael Institute, "probably the most respectable and independent IR institute in the Netherlands": http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nrc.nl%2Fnieuws%2F2013%2F02%2F14%2Fclingendael-krijgsmacht-met-jsf-minst-aantrekkelijke-toekomstscenario%2F Inoltre varie fonti hanno citato Brig. Gen. Silvano Frigerio riguardo l'esperienza in Libia: www.aviationweek.com Although much of the focus of Libya strike operations has been on platforms such as the Tornado GR4, Eurofighter Typhoon and Dassault Rafale fighters, one lesson emerging from the conflict is the need to have a low-cost aircraft to support such prolonged operations...... “We need to think about the need for the future for a low-cost platform to be able to do our job, if required, in a permissive environment,” argues Brig. Gen. Silvano Frigerio, deputy chief of air and space plans in the Italian air force and chief of the targeting directorate for NATO’s Libya operations. “If we don’t have a composite fleet with very high technology and maybe lesser technology aircraft, how can we manage to fly thousands and thousands of flying hours on a joint operation area looking for one armored vehicle with the sophisticated aircraft we will have in the future? Maybe we can’t afford to stay there for such a long time,”..... Italy saw the difference firsthand when comparing the cost of operating a fully loaded AMX ground attack aircraft with other strike assets. The talk is not of freezing expenditure to adapt to the new financial context. It is not of a sensible ‘dip’ in resources, to ensure the French MoD pulls its shift in the war on deficits. With significant rounds of cuts planned across the board domestically, the military cannot expect to escape wholly unscathed on the count of its current foreign engagements. Neither is the talk is of scaling down – that is, of maintaining the same army, but less of it. Nor is it of scrapping this or that specific capability – like the Dutch did recently with battle tanks and the Danes with submarines." e qualcosa di simile accade anche nel UK
  11. "Non e' da escludere a questo punto che Olanda e Danimarca preferiscano 1) il Gripen E/F con i suoi costi relativamente contenuti ed il radar AESA Selex The Swedish government approved the decision to purchase 60 Gripen Es on 17 January 2013 2) Eurofighter invece di JSF. Sia la Spagna che l'Italia stanno offrendo Eurofighter con la formula dell'"usato sicuro" (e.g. Peru e Bulgaria) http://sofiaglobe.co...ext-government/ http://www.elconfide...o-con-los-rusos " A conferma di quanto sopra ecco uno snippet da jsfnieuws.nl http://www.jsfnieuws.nl/?p=981 "Low Operating and Support costs important Danish Parliament knows a decision will have huge influence on the defence procurement budget for nearly a decade. Also the operating and support cost will affect the entire defense budget over 30-40 years ahead. Therefore low long term operating and support costs are important for Denmark. Comeback of Eurofighter Typhoon The comeback of Eurofighter is the most interesting fact. It may be a relatively strong candidate, because the plane is used by the close NATO allies Germany and Britain. Also Germany is a very important trading partner and the most important country for Danish export. There is some speculation about a possibility for Denmark to buying Eurofighters destined for the German Tranche 3b series or buying used Eurofighters Tranche ½ version from Germany, so that Germany can shift to the new Tranche 3b version. There were no legal or evaluation conditions that could give objections to a comeback of Eurofighter in the competition." But Germany, which had no experience in this field and is keen on Technology Transfer, wanted that in its workshare and got it – and as must have been expected with it being treated as a work experience programme, this led to substantial, and therefore costly, delays" Secondo il Financial Times poi, riguardo il contratto in India. "Among Eurofighter’s partners – the UK’s BAE Systems, pan-European EADS and Italy’s Finmeccanica – developing the active electronically scanned array, which improves on old systems by being far harder to detect, was the job of the Italians. Finmeccanica was at the mercy of the UK government and its decision over how quickly to integrate the critical technology into Typhoon. In the end, the French were quicker and that, say analysts, helped nudge India’s decision towards Dassault’s Rafale." http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/6829d304-c471-11e1-a98c-00144feabdc0.html#axzz2NcPB4pWi Un riferimento a questo tipo di problematiche lo ha fatto anche Dassault: http://www.flightglobal.com/news/articles/neuron-partners-show-off-future-fighter-know-how-382100/ "What the multi-company effort has proved, argues Edelstenne, is that Europe's aerospace champions can work together successfully, provided they have the correct framework in place to avoid the "limitations" of existing models of collaboration. Aside from the concept of industrial and governmental leaders - the roles taken by Dassault and the DGA on the Neuron - a key stipulation of the programme was that the "contribution of the partners should be based on their existing competencies, not the ones they would like to acquire at a cost to the European taxpayer", says Edelstenne."
  12. Oggi la Danimarca ha annunciato che il bando per l'acquisto dei suoi nuovi caccia verra riaperto (alla canadese) Denmark Relaunches Fighter Jet Competition http://www.defensenews.com/article/20130314/DEFREG01/303140009/Denmark-Relaunches-Fighter-Jet-Competition?odyssey=tab|topnews|text|FRONTPAGE "Denmark has restarted a competition to select a fighter jet to replace the Air Force’s fleet of F-16s and has reopened the door to a bid from Eurofighter with the Typhoon." Per fare un po il punto della situazione odierna: UK The United Kingdom has reduced and delayed its order of JSF. Quantita' ancora da stabilire. Italy Italy has cut its acquisition of JSFs from 131 planes to 90. The Netherlands The Dutch parliament voted to ditch the Joint Strike Fighter. 31/10/2012 The incoming Dutch cabinet will decide late 2013 whether it will purchase the Joint Strike Fighter aircraft for the Netherlands' airforce, according to the coalition agreement that was published on Monday. Previous governments were holding on to 2015 as the ultimate year for a decision to replace the aging F-16 fleet, the International European Daily Express reported on Wednesday. (CBC, 21:50) "So what is the point of this plane?" "The point is to spend money, that is the mission of the airplane." 14. Nel primo articolo di defensenews l'ultimo paragrafo e' forse chiave: “There are going to be footsteps behind Lockheed eventually from the next generation, whatever it is, of air dominance system,” Kendall said. “At some point, we’re going to go beyond F-35 to whatever comes next, and the point at which we choose to do that will depend in part on how well we get the cost of the F-35 down and on how well it performs.”
  15. Questo con un aereo che non ha avuto il livello di problematiche del F35: "F-22 Raptor kill markings shown off by German Eurofighter Typhoons." http://theaviationist.com/2012/07/23/f-22-raptor-kill-markings/ Details of F-35 Performance in Wargame: http://www.defense-aerospace.com/article-view/verbatim/133273/f_35-fares-worse-in-rand-wargame.html http://www.docstoc.com/docs/42891479/Air-Combat-Past-Present-and-Future ------ Qui poi un altro articolo di ieri sul Washington Times: http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2013/mar/6/report-super-fighter-will-get-pilots-shot-down/ "The U.S. Air Force version of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter has shortcomings that will get pilots shot down in combat, according to a leaked Pentagon report evaluating combat testing of the plane." e questo di oggi sul National Post: http://news.nationalpost.com/2013/03/06/f-35-design-problems-make-night-flying-impossible-increase-risk-of-being-shot-down-u-s-pilots-warn/ " F-35 design problems make night flying impossible, increase risk of being shot down, U.S. pilots warn " Il drone X47B ha gia effettuato prove di atterraggio sulla portaerei Truman. http://blogs.defensenews.com/intercepts/2012/12/first-pics-x-47b-unmanned-aircraft-aboard-carrier-truman/ http://www.flightglobal.com/news/articles/us-navy-uav-programmes-near-major-milestones-382320/ E' un stealthy drone con turbofan F100-220U ed ha inoltre due weapon bays e puo portare fino a 2000 kg.
"siamo lieti" sarebbe il "royal we" inglese? Brasile e Turchia menzionati prima (4 febbraio 2012): http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/italy-wants-to-build-first-turkish-fighter-jet-plane.aspx?pageID=238&nID=12988&NewsCatID=344 ... 17.
Citando Flightglobal: 'Some fighter pilots offered their comments on FlightGlobal: ” ‘What an embarrassment, and there will be obvious tactical implications,’ another highly experienced fighter pilot says. ‘[it's] certainly not anywhere near the performance of most fourth and fifth-generation aircraft.' http://www.flightglobal.com/news/articles/reduced-f-35-performance-specifications-may-have-significant-operational-impact-381683/ Visti alcuni commenti che ho letto nel forum traduco per chi non capisce "fourth generation" = quarta generazione = aerei in servizio da circa 1980 ad oggi.....
  20. Irrinunciabile? Vedremo come va a finire. Per il momento anche la variante B sta avendo problemi come descritto nell'articolo di Gaillard: " F-35B: STOVL Missions Raise Risks That the F-35B’s lift fan system remains untested against live fire while in operation (when its rotating blades would be most failure prone) is probably irrelevant since AV-8B Harrier II-type vertical landings on unprepared surfaces just behind front lines will be problematic at best and even downright dangerous for the F-35B. Despite best USMC intentions regarding close air support and the F-35B’s specialized STOVL capabilities, discussions had already begun three years ago on ways to “limit heat damage to carrier decks and other surfaces,” very possibly leading to “severe F-35 operating restrictions and or costly facility upgrades, repairs or both” (http://www.dodbuzz.com/2010/07/19/jsf-heat-woes-being-fixed-trautman/). Indeed, Bill Sweetman (in his Ares blog for Aviation Week) quotes from a Navy report issued in January of 2010 which “outlines what base-construction engineers need to do to ensure that the F-35B’s exhaust does not turn the surface it lands on into an area-denial weapon. And it’s not trivial. Vertical-landing ‘pads will be exposed to 1700 deg. F and high velocity (Mach 1) exhaust,’ the report says. The exhaust will melt asphalt and ‘is likely to spall the surface of standard airfield concrete pavements on the first VL.’ (The report leaves to the imagination what jagged chunks of spalled concrete will do in a supersonic blast field.)” Heat-resistant reinforced concrete, special sealants…the list goes on. And what about that unprepared field, where debris thrown up and sucked into the intakes as the F-35B touches down causes incapacitating foreign object damage (FOD) to the aircraft’s engine? And what would be long-term effects on carrier decks? Not a pleasant scenario. Discussion of these problems—and their solutions—do not appear in the 2012 DOT&E report.
