RCAF, Flying Instructors School (FIS)

Motto: Doctor adfectat aeternitatem (A teacher affects eternity)

An owl perched on a key. Both the device and the motto reflect the school's important role of training pilots to be instructors for new generations of pilots.

No. I Flying Instructors' School was first formed at Trenton on 3 August 1942 to meet the increased demand for instructors in the schools of the B.C.A.T.P. When the demand eased with the reduction of the Plan in the closing months of the war, the F.I.S. was disbanded on 31 January 1945 and amalgamated with the Central Flying School. In the post-war years, as more flying training schools and advanced flying units were opened, it again became necessary to form No. 1 Flying Instructors' School at Trenton, on 1 April 1951, to supply the instructors needed for the greatly increased training programme.

Royal Air Force 221 Squadron.

Motto: "From sea to sea"

Badge: A flying fish

No.221 Squadron was formed at Stavros on 1 April 1918 from D Squadron, RNAS for anti-submarine duties in the Aegean. Comprising Nos.552, 553 and 554 Flights, the squadron became mobile in October while based at Mudros and in December was taken by the seaplane carrier 'Riviera' to South Russia to support the White Russian forces, disbanding there on 1 September 1919.

On 21 November 1940, No.221 reformed at Bircham Newton with Wellingtons and began convoy escort patrols on 23 February 1941. Next month it began shipping reconnaissance sweeps along the Dutch coast and in May moved to Northern Ireland for anti-submarine patrols. The squadron began to move to Iceland at the end of September, returning to the UK in December and in January 1942 was posted to the Middle East. No.221's Wellingtons flew out during January and February and were attached to No.47 squadron until ground crews arrived by sea. Shipping search and strike missions began in March in addition to anti-submarine patrols, while a detachment operated in Malta until absorbed by No.69 Squadron on 26 August 1942. A flight of Liberators was attached from No.120 Squadron in July and remained until 29 October. As well as locating and illuminating Axis convoys, the squadron was also equipped for night attacks with torpedo-carrying Wellingtons but as North Africa was cleared of the enemy, use of these weapons decreased and by May 1943 the squadron was mainly engaged in bombing ports in Italy and carrying out anti-submarine patrols. By September 1943 No.221 was fully occupied in patrol duties but after moving to Italy in March 1944, it began shipping reconnaissance missions and attacks on enemy light craft in the Adlantic. After moving to Greece in October 1944 and taking part in bombing, anti-submarine and supply-dropping missions, the squadron returned to Egypt and disbanded on 25 August 1945.
