The US Navy and Marine Corps are being forced to patch up their ageing fleet of Hornet fighter jets after reports they are falling apart mid-air.

Last weekend at Rockford Airfest in Illinois, one of the Blue Angels display team came close to catastrophe when it lost the maneuvering slat on its left wing.

The F/A 18 Hornets had been performing aerobatics when the flight control section appeared to have simply broken away from one of the lead aircraft - Blue Angel 5.

Buongiorno, ho visto di recente la puntata della serie "Mighty Planes" dedicata ai Blue Angels, dicevano che gli aerei che usano sono i più vecchi Hornet della flotta, e dato che di F/A 18 C/D non se se fabbricano più è sempre una sfida tenerli in efficienza. Purtroppo è fisiologico che prima o poi la vetustà diventi eccessiva...

Ed ora ..... Super Hornet !

 

The US Navy has started a process to replace the Blue Angels demonstration team’s aircraft with a squadron of Boeing F/A-18E Super Hornets.

Boeing will receive a contract to draw up the engineering plans needed to convert the single-seat Super Hornet into a configuration specific to the Blue Angels role, the navy said in a 3 December acquisition notice.
