Four B-52s and about 300 airmen returned to Barksdale AFB, La., after a four-week task force deployment to Europe that included training exercises throughout that continent and the Middle East.
The bombers from the 2nd Bomb Wing flew 32 sorties at its deployed home base of RAF Fairford, England, and trained with 13 total partner nations since first deploying last month.

Not only is the photo remarkable because it pictures a rare (not catastrophic) engine mishap, but also because another peculiar feature of the B-52 is clearly visible: the so-called “beauty wrinkles” on the front fuselage of the iconic bomber.
Our readers have noticed these “wrinkles” or “ripples“.
Commenting our post on social networks, many have suggested they may have been a sign of the airframes aging.
However, they have nothing to do with age of the B-52: they are the visual effect of the aircraft’s skin buckling.

Rimotorizzazione ... qualcosa (finalmente) si muove ...

The US Air Force (USAF) released a draft request for proposal to replace the engines of the ageing Boeing B-52H Stratofortress.
The notice brings the B-52H re-engine programme one step closer to kick off.
The service plans to buy 608 commercial engines – plus additional spare engines and support equipment – enabling it to operate the heavy bombers until at least 2050, a 23 April notice says.
The USAF plans to award a contract in May 2021.
The engines are to be delivered over 17 years.

A B-52 assigned to the 2nd Bomb Wing at Barksdale Air Force Base, La., lost an access panel during a May 1 flyover to honor individuals on the frontlines of the fight against the new coronavirus in New Orleans.
Around 10:30 a.m. local time, a hand-sized panel from the Stratofortress became dislodged over New Orleans city limits, wing spokesperson 2nd Lt. Aileen Lauer told Air Force Magazine later the same day.
“The panel landed on private property and was quickly recovered by Air Force personnel, in partnership with local authorities,” she said.

Rimotorizzazione ... si parte ... rilasciata la RFP ...

The Air Force on May 19 issued its request for proposals on the B-52 Commercial Engine Replacement Program, calling for responses by July and a contract award expected in June 2021.
GE Aviation, Raytheon Technologies’ Pratt & Whitney unit, and Rolls-Royce have all said they will compete.
The service, in the RFP, confirmed it wants to buy a total of 608 engines to equip 76 B-52s, each of which mounts eight engines arrayed two each in four nacelles.
For prototyping purposes, USAF will start with 20 engines - 16 for two aircraft plus four spares.
The first contract will be indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity, with production models delivered through 2037.
The B-52 is slated to remain in service through 2050.

Six B-52s trained alongside Royal Norwegian F-16s and F-35s in Northern Norway shortly after they deployed to Europe on Aug. 22.
The task force of B-52s deployed to RAF Fairford, England, from the 5th Bomb Wing at Minot Air Force Base, N.D., for a “long-planned training mission where the aircraft will conduct theater and flight training across Europe and Africa,” U.S. Air Forces in Europe-Air Forces Africa said in a release.

Arriva "Laura? ... e i "giganti" sloggiano, per precauzione, da Barksdale ... ?️ ⛈️ ?

As Hurricane Laura strengthens to a Category 4 storm, Eighth Air Force is moving most of its 47 or so B-52 bombers at Barksdale Air Force Base, La., to other locations and putting base personnel at HURCON 2, the second-highest storm readiness level, rather than evacuating personnel, a 2nd Bomb Wing spokesman said.
Barksdale, which hosts 8th Air Force, Global Strike Command, and about half the Air Force’s B-52H force, is located in northwest Louisiana, almost directly in the path of Laura, which is predicted to skirt the Louisiana/Texas border after making landfall the night of Aug. 26.
The National Hurricane Center predicted Laura will still be at about Category 1 strength, with winds up to 95 miles per hour, when it reaches the vicinity of Shreveport and Bossier City, where Barksdale is located, the morning of Aug. 27.

The 2nd Bomb Wing’s B-52s have returned to Barksdale Air Force Base, La., and operations there have returned to a normal operating tempo just two days after Hurricane Laura swept toward nearby Shreveport and threatened grave damage, a wing spokesman said.
Laura was still a Category 1 storm pushing winds in excess of 85 miles per hour when it passed within a few miles of Barksdale, in northwest Louisiana, but the base itself saw far less fierce winds and only suffered minor damage and flooding, the spokesman said.
Airmen on base took precautionary measures, such as boarding up windows and deploying sandbags in areas prone to flooding during heavy rains.

Three USAF B-52s flew through the Baltic Sea region on Aug. 31, training with aircraft from six nations and flying over Latvia just days after a Russian aircraft reportedly violated NATO airspace to intercept another B-52.
During the Aug. 31 flight, the B-52s, which are deployed as part of the bomber task force at RAF Fairford, U.K., trained with aircraft from Belgium, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, and Portugal, then flew over Riga, Latvia, according to a U.S. Air Forces in Europe-Air Forces Africa release.
A USAF KC-135 from RAF Mildenhall, U.K., supported the bomber flight.

Un altro decennio di miglioramenti consentirà al B-52 ulteriori tre decenni di vita ...

Quote

The nearly 60-year-old B-52 will be the workhorse of the Air Force’s bomber fleet another 30 years at least, reinvigorated with upgrades to boost its range, power, sensors, and bomb-carrying capacity.
Once complete, Air Force Global Strike Command’s  improvements to its 76 B-52s will provide the equivalent of an extra 22 bombers’ worth of weapon-carrying capacity.
The multitude of upgrades are already well underway and will continue into the late 2020s, providing aircraft built in the 1950s and ’60s - the last B-52 was built in 1963 (*) - with modern engines and radars, new capability to carry more smart weapons internally, new communications and connectivity, and the ability to deliver the most advanced missiles in USAF’s inventory.
B-52s will also remain a key part of the American nuclear deterrent.
The changes are significant enough that the upgraded bombers could be redesignated from B-52H to “B-52H+” or “B-52J.”
