"I saw it from a distance when it landed and it didn't really look like there was anything wrong with it," Weaver said.

 

It was not immediately clear what caused the 11:05 a.m. AST accident during a training exercise in a rural area about 90 miles east of Fairbanks in Alaska's interior, McGarry said.

 

"It's still very early on," McGarry said. "Everybody's working diligently, but it's just a matter of getting things together."

 

The National Weather Service in Fairbanks said conditions were mostly cloudy with a few scattered showers at the time of the collision.

 

The crash happened during the Red Flag-Alaska training exercise taking place at the Pacific Alaska Range Complex, a 67,000-square mile training ground.

 

Shortly after the crash, Eielson officials contacted the Alaska Air National Guard 11th Rescue Coordination Center, which redirected an HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopter to rescue the pilot, said McHugh Pierre, a spokesman for the Alaska Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.

 

That crash was blamed on pilot disorientation, though equipment failure and weather may have contributed to it, Air Force officials reported at the time.

Le dimensioni degl'aerei coinvolti non significano niente: in Brasile un Legacy (executive dell'Embraer) si è scontrato con un 737. Il Legacy è atterrato senza grandi danni, il Boeing è precipitato con la morte di tutti i 195 passeggeri e tripulanti!

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Air Force on Tuesday identified two fighter pilots involved in a mid-air collision during a training exercise at Eielson Air Force Base.

 

Maj. Jason W. Costello, an F-15 pilot, and Maj. Brett R. Paola, an F-16 pilot, have been released from the base clinic and “are doing well” following Monday's crash, according to Airman Justin Weaver, a base spokesman. Neither pilot sustained any injuries, Weaver said.

 

Costello is assigned to Langley Air Force Base, Va., and Paola is assigned to the 64th Aggressor Squadron at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev.

 

The pilots were engaged in a simulated combat mission during Red Flag-Alaska. The two-week training exercise includes more than 1,400 military members and about 80 aircraft from the U.S., Singapore and Australia.

 

“The exercise prepares new pilots that might be flying overseas and trains them for realistic threats through simulated combat sorties,” Weaver said.

 

Costello ejected from the F-15C after the collision and Paola managed to land the F-16c. The $30 million F-15C hit the ground and is considered irreparable, Weaver said. The extent of damage to the F-16C was not immediately known.

 

The cause of the crash will be investigated by a team of senior Air Force officers and a report will be made public in two to three months, Weaver said.

 

Meanwhile, Red Flag will resume on Wednesday and is scheduled to run through Friday.

 

The collision occurred shortly after 11 a.m. in mostly cloudy skies at the Pacific Alaska Range Complex about 90 miles east of Fairbanks in Alaska's interior. The 67,000 square-mile training range, roughly the size of Kansas, is one of the largest in the world.

 

The crash is the third to occur during Red Flag-Alaska, previously known as “Cope Thunder,” in the last 16 years, Weaver said. Three to four such exercises are held in Alaska each year.
