The black box of the C-130J transport aircraft that crashed near Gwalior on Friday has suffered damage and the Air Force has sent it to the US to seek the assistance of its manufacturer Lockheed Martin in decoding the data, IAF officials said on Sunday.
The connectors of the Flight Data Recorder or the black box are damaged along with the card inside the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR).
"To avoid any loss of data while trying to decode the equipment, we have decided to send the black box to the US," an IAF spokesperson said here.
The black box was sent by an early morning flight today to Lockheed Martin, he said.
The delay in decoding the black box data would also mean a delay in determining the cause of the crash, he said.
The IAF had stated on Friday that it would come out with a preliminary report on the reasons behind the mishap in 24 hours.
The IAF spokesperson also denied reports suggesting that the C-130J fleet has been grounded after the crash, saying the aircraft did not fly yesterday as the personnel of the squadron were busy in the last rites of the five victims of the crash.
The Super Hercules Special Operations transport aircraft crashed near Gwalior killing five crew members on Friday last after taking off from Agra.
The aircraft had apparently hit a hillock before crashing on the rocky surface on the banks of Chambal river near Gwalior.
India had recently inducted six C-130J Super Hercules aircraft, which were bought from the US at a cost of around Rs 5,780 crore (USD 962 million) four years ago.
The home base of the 77 squadron 'Veiled Vipers' operating the aircraft is Hindon in Ghaziabad near here.
The aircraft were recently landed on the Daulat Beg Oldie air field near the China border and have helped in boosting the IAF's capability to airlift troops closer to the border in times of emergency.
On the demands of the IAF, the Defence Ministry recently placed orders for six more such aircraft from the US.
The loss of such a big asset is considered a setback for the IAF.

Ancora a proposito dei problemi che affliggono i caccia Sukhoi ..... in India piovono pesanti critiche .....

Ahead of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Moscow Dec. 24-25, India's autonomous auditing agency Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) says the Russian-made Su-30MKIaircraft with the Indian Air Force (IAF) suffer from poor serviceability, which is just around 55 percent to 60 percent against the prescribed norm of 75 percent.

The 218-page CAG report tabled in Indian Parliament Dec. 18 notes that the operational readiness of Su-30MKI was low due to high rate of AOG (Aircraft on Ground), low serviceability and less achievement in flying hours.

An IAF official said the high rate of AOG means that out of 210 Su-30MKI with the IAF, around 115-126 aircraft are grounded for repairs and serviceability, which the officer said affects the combat worthiness.

FGFA ..... un importante programma che arranca da anni (cosa che sembra ormai di prammatica in India) fra punte di moderato ottimismo e profondo pessimismo ...

The Indo-Russian fifth-generation fighter aircraft under joint development and production by the two countries has taken a hit, with Russia showing reluctance to fully transfer the aircraft technology, particularly stealth capabilities, despite repeated reminders, according to a top Indian Air Force official.
After the preliminary agreement on the particulars of the fifth-generation fighter aircraft (FGFA) program in 2010, and with both sides having paid $295 million each, the final agreement that enables India to release more than $4 billion, is pending.
The Air Force has worked out its requirements for the FGFA, but the crucial "work sharing and technology sharing draft has yet to be finalized," the IAF official said.
"The project is likely to get delayed further unless the issue of transfer of technology is finalized," offered Daljit Singh, a defense analyst and retired Indian Air Force air marshal.
India should insist on technology transfer in specified fields, he added, as "full technology transfer may not be feasible."

L' India ora punta sull' usato ...

India has begun discreet negotiations with France for the purchase of 31 grounded strike fighters previously used by the French Air Force.
The French government made the offer of sale for the Jaguar fighters about six months ago, and India is actively pursuing the opportunity, according to a top Indian Ministry of Defence official.
The offer will be actively discussed during an official visit to France July 17-20 of India's Air Force chief, Air Chief Marshal Birender Singh Dhanoa, the MoD official noted.
The government official refused to comment on the price offered by France for the Jaguar fighters, but did say India is actively considering acquiring them after proper refurbishment.

Avio-cisterne e aerei da trasporto acquistati in Russia ... a quanto pare l'India non ha fatto un buon affare ...

A report by India’s comptroller and auditor general (CAG) has highlighted the poor serviceability of 14 Ilyushin Il-76MD heavy transports and six Il-78 tankers operated by the nation's air force.
According to a CAG report, average serviceability of the Il-76 and Il-78 fleet in the period from 2010-2016 was 38% and 49%, respectively.
The required average figure for both types is set at 70%.
“On average, 41% of Il-76 and 32% of Il-78 [aircraft] remained grounded,” the report says.
The types are expected to remain in service until 2040.

Una bèga interna blocca il programma di aggiornamento dei Mirage 2000-H ...

The upgrade of India’s Mirage 2000-H fleet could face a roadblock, after the maintenance warranty from original equipment manufacturers Dassault Aviation and Thales of France expired with nobody willing to continue footing the bill.
The two companies are demanding an annual maintenance fee of around $15 million from state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, the prime contractor on the upgrade, to extend the tooling & test machinery and equipment warranty that expired last month.
HAL is refusing to pay, instead asking Indian Air Force to make the payments; IAF argues however that the annual maintenance fee is part the upgrade contract with HAL.
HAL executives refused to comment officially on the subject, but a company source said the company is pursuing the issue with the service.
HAL is currently undertaking upgradation of 47 Mirage fighters independently — an effort that kicked off in 2015.
Seven aircraft have been delivered to the IAF thus far.

Ed ora Boeing propone lo F-15EX ... in concorrenza col suo stesso F/A-18E/F ...

Quote

Boeing is contemplating pitching the F-15EX to New Delhi for one of the country’s long-running fighter procurements - a contest in which its F/A-18E/F is already competing.
The airframer confirms that it has requested US government clearance to offer the twin-engined type for an Indian air force requirement for 110 fighters.
“While awaiting further definition on the Indian air force’s requirements, we have requested a license for the F-15 so that we’re ready to share the full spectrum of potential solutions across our fighter portfolio when appropriate,” says the company.
“We continue to offer the F/A-18 Super Hornet to both the Indian navy and Indian air force, and our F-15 is experiencing a resurgence in interest in the US and around the world.”
