Messaggi raccomandati

A-10s Save Soldiers Caught in Ambush ....

Two A-10s operating from Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan, provided close air support to a group of soldiers during a harrowing two-hour battle, saving the lives of 60 soldiers and killing multiple insurgents, according to a Bagram release.

The soldiers were conducting a routine clearance patrol on July 24 when their lead vehicle turned over on an Afghan highway, forcing them to establish an overnight base, states the Aug. 6 release.

The next morning, they began taking heavy fire from a nearby tree line; three soldiers suffered injuries.

The A-10s, piloted by airmen deployed from Moody AFB, Ga., arrived on the scene shortly thereafter, delivering air-to-surface munitions after an initial show of force.

When the enemy moved closer to the soldiers in an effort to prevent another strafing run, the ground commander cleared the pilots to engage "danger close," according to the release.

Throughout the battle, the A-10s completed 15 gun passes, firing nearly all of their 2,300 rounds of 30 mm ammunition, and dropped three 500-pound bombs, states the release.

"This was one of the most intense sorties our squadron has come into contact with in the last four months in theater," said the lead pilot.

The Air Force’s Awesome Attack Plane Has a Pretty Sad Replacement ....

The A-10 is the best warplane for saving lives — too bad its days are numbered ....

On July 24, dozens of U.S. troops in Afghanistan were nearly wiped out by a Taliban ambush.

Until two A-10 Warthog attack planes showed up.

The 40th Flight Test Squadron at Eglin AFB, Fla., is testing whether the A-10 can safely carry its 600-gallon external fuel tank into combat, according to a base release."Currently, the A-10 doesn't carry an external fuel store into combat," said Maj. Olivia Elliott, test pilot for this evaluation. "The present flight limitations on the Sargent Fletcher tank restrict it from being flown in a combat environment," she said. So far, in more than 30 test flights, there have been no anomalies, states Eglin's Aug. 26 release. Once the testing is complete, and the data are reviewed, the Air Force will decide whether to clear the fuel tank in this role. If approved, the A-10's loiter time would expand by 45 minutes to an hour, states the release. "This will allow the aircraft to remain in flight during a combat situation longer, provide lengthier periods of armed overwatch for ground missions, as well as limit the amount of time spent air-to-air refueling during a combat sortie," said Elliott. normalmente se spezzi un'ala ad un aereo cade e va in mille pezzi... questo invece sopravvive.

Air Force Brass Ignores War's Lessons to Wipe Out A-10s ....

The Air Force is so blinded by the allure of the multi-mission F-35 that it cannot, or will not, understand the nature of close air support (CAS) on today’s battlefield; how very close our young troops are to the enemy and the special equipment, controllers, and pilots it takes to perform CAS.

Until recently, without the knowledge of Congress, the Air Force was moving fast on a secret plan to help fund the F-35 by abolishing the A-10 fleet.

Thanks to some closet patriots contacting the Hill, the cat is now out of the bag, but the damage has already been done.

Sempre sui tagli all'A-10.

Lawmakers Oppose A-10 Cut
A bipartisan, bicameral group of 33 lawmakers told Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and Joint Chiefs Chairman Army Gen. Martin Dempsey that they would "oppose any effort" by the Air Force to divest the A-10 fleet. "It is essential that the Air Force not take any additional steps toward divestment," wrote the group, led by Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.) and Rep. Ron Barber (D-Ariz.) in a Nov. 13 letter to them. The Air Force has been examining the option of eliminating the A-10 fleet in Fiscal 2015 as a cost-savings move. The lawmakers, however, argued that this move would create a close air support capability gap that would "reduce Air Force combat power and unnecessarily endanger our service members in future conflicts." While conceding that the Air Force faces "significant budget pressure and uncertainty," they told Hagel and Dempsey that an A-10 cut would be "unconscionable," since this would run counter to Congress' belief that the aircraft's past performance, low operations costs, and unique capability warrant its preservation. Ayotte has been a leading voice in preserving the A-10 fleet; for several weeks, she had a hold on the nomination of Deborah James to be Air Force Secretary over this matter.

Pilots Plan Tomorrow’s A-10 ....

What would a next-generation replacement for the legendary attack jet look like?
Short on cash and determined to prioritize new stealth warplanes, the U.S. Air Force is busily trying to rid itself of all 350 of its slow- and low-flying A-10 Warthog attack planes—this despite the heavily-armed twin-engine jet’s impressive combat record stretching back to the 1991 Gulf War.
But the flying branch still needs to support American troops on the ground—the Warthog’s raison d’etre.
With that in mind, around 20 highly experienced A-10 pilots and engineers are working on unofficial specifications for a successor to the Warthog.

The amendment introduced by Ayotte would prevent the service from retiring the A-10 until Fanning or his successor certifies to Congress that its planned replacement, the F-35 Lightning II fighter jet, is fully ready to fly combat operations -- which is still years away.
Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Welsh recently testified that the F-35A, the service's version of the stealth fighter designed for conventional take-offs and landings, won't reach so-called full operational capability until 2021.
...
Ayotte's amendment would also require that the F-35 run a version of software known as Block 4A, which includes enhanced electronic warfare functions for close-air support and the ability drop a GBU-53 Small Diameter Bomb version II or its equivalent, according to a copy of the text.
...
The House, meanwhile, has already passed its version of the legislation.
:asd:
