The investigation into the June 26, F-16 mishap at Luke Air Force Base, determined the mishap was due to the pilot’s decision-making error after the aircraft suffered low-altitude bird strikes following takeoff.

An F-16 damaged the control tower of the military training area Vliehors on Vlieland with its mounted gun.The accident occurred Monday afternoon when the fighter fired on a ground target, but hit the tower instead. There was only property damage. The Air Force is investigating what took place.

The Vliehors is the only training area in the Netherlands where pilots of the Air Force and NATO partners may practice, using ammunition and explosive charges.

Few people live in the area and it has a relatively free airspace.

Nasce il Block-61: United Arab Emirates – Equipment in Support of a Direct Commercial Sale of F-16 Block 61 Aircraft

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has requested a possible sale of equipment in support of its commercial purchase of 30 F-16 Block 61 aircraft and to support the upgrade of its existing F-16 Block 60 aircraft. Major Defense Equipment includes: 40 20mm M61A Guns; and 40 Embedded GPS Inertial Navigation Systems. Also included: Identification Friend or Foe Equipment; Joint Mission Planning System; night vision devices; Cartridge Activated Device/Propellant Activated Devices; Weapons Integration; spare and repair parts; tools and test equipment; personnel training and training equipment; publications and technical documentation; International Engine Management Program - Component Improvement Program; repair and return; aerial refueling support; ferry maintenance and services; site surveys; U.S. Government and contractor engineering, technical and l ogistics support services; and other related elements of logistics and program support.

The estimated cost is $270 million

ekks5e.jpg

Impression of a proposed version, the Agile Falcon.

This larger version of the F-16 never got into production.

Features of this variant were integrated into the block 40 aircraft.

The Japanese took over the concept for their F-2.

This is slighty larger, with 4 underwing hardpoints, just like the proposed Agile Falcon.

[GD impression] ....

In 1984, General Dynamics proposed the Agile Falcon as a counter to new Soviet fighters such as the MiG-29 and the Su-27.

It was designed to make use of some of the already-planned improvements to the Fighting Falcon known as MSIP IV.

In addition, it had a 25-percent larger wing and was powered by an improved General Electric F110-GE-129 or Pratt & Whitney F100-PW-229 engine.

Very little interest was attracted at that time.

Not giving up easily, General Dynamics proposed the Agile Falcon as a low-cost alternative to the F-22 Advanced Tactical Fighter.

It is intended for the US and the four original NATO members, General Dynamics arguing that the new European fighters such as the Dassault Rafale and the SAAB Gripen lacked the performance and avionics to dominate the MiG-29/Su-27 threat.

In October of 1987, the USAF announced that they might develop the Agile Falcon on its own even if the European partners backed out of the program.

However, in the current military drawdown, the Agile Falcon program remains in limbo, and is unlikely to proceed any further.

Intanto in USA non ci sono fondi per l’aggiornamento avionico di 300 F-16, precedentemente previsto come conseguenza dei ritardi del programma F-35: F-16 Upgrade Dropped From US Budget Proposal

A major F-16 upgrade program is likely to be left out of the president’s fiscal 2015 budget request, according to multiple sources.

The Combat Avionics Programmed Extension Suite (CAPES) is a US Air Force program to replace the avionics and radars for 300 US F-16s. It would also upgrade 146 Taiwanese F-16A/B fighters purchased in the 1990s.

Sources said the US Air Force has decided not to fund the CAPES program, instead reinvesting some of that money toward a general F-16 service-life extension program (SLEP) while putting the rest toward modernization efforts for other platforms.

....By moving money toward the SLEP, the Air Force would provide some cover against the F-35 joint strike fighter slipping past its December 2016 initial operating capability date.

“There is a real force structure problem looming. So something has to be done to keep the F-16, or at least part of the F-16 fleet, effective,” said Richard Aboulafia, vice president of analysis with the Virginia-based Teal Group.

The Air Force appears to be planning “the bare minimum, rather than something that would offer more capability,” he added. “That helps solve the force structure problem, but of course it doesn’t do anything for combat effectiveness.”

While losing out on CAPES would be a blow to the Pentagon’s fleet of F-16s, it would have much greater impact on Taiwan.

In 2011, the US Air Force awarded Taiwan a $5.3 billion upgrade program for its remaining fleet of 146 F-16A/B fighters. Taiwan’s program would be directly based on the CAPES program, with USAF making all of the source selections.

Niente AESA per gli F-16 USAF ....

Killing F-16 CAPES ....

The Air Force was forced to make many “tough choices” as it put together its Fiscal 2015 budget request, including the termination of the F-16 Combat Avionics Programmed Extension Suite, or CAPES, program, said Maj. Gen. Jim Martin, USAF deputy assistant secretary for budget, on Tuesday.

Under the CAPES program, F-16s were to be upgraded with new AESA radar and a new cockpit display, along with data link enhancements and an improved defensive suite in an effort to keep the aging fighters viable until the F-35 strike fighter comes online.

“[Termination of] that program did save us money over the [Future Years Defense Program], but let me be very clear that we still invested money in our legacy aircraft to keep them viable,” said Martin during an AFA-sponsored, Air Force breakfast event in Arlington, Va.

“We did provide some upgrades and modifications for our F-15s, for example, so we did our best in the legacy aircraft to keep those platforms capable.”

The Air Force’s Fiscal 2015 budget requests $240.947 million for the APG-82(V) radar modernization program for F-15E Strike Eagles, up significantly from the $182.927 million for the program in Fiscal 2013.

In addition, USAF will continue to fund the APG-63(V)3 radar upgrade for its F-15C/D Eagles, according to budget documents.

Se ti riferisci all'F-15:
