http://www.flightglobal.com/news/articles/northrop-grumman-to-pitch-new-aesa-radar-to-export-customers-376369/

-wow

- monomotore, di facile manutenzione

-wow

- Possibilità di soppressione di SAM

- eccellente

- fila a 1000 km/h a 20 mt dalle cime degli alberi

- maddaiiiii

- mmhhhhh difficile

- ahh no allora non so che farmene

Lockheed Martin hopes to cash in by upgrading F-16s

The announcement last week that the U.S. government had awarded Lockheed a $1.85 billion contract to upgrade Taiwan's 145 F-16s is the first of what may be several big deals to come in the next year or two.

Already, South Korea has announced plans to contract with BAE Systems to overhaul its 130 F-16s at a cost that has been variously estimated at $750 million to $1.1 billion.

Another potential competitor is Boeing. An official with Chicago-based aerospace manufacturer said it's interested in the business, since it has gained F-16 experience by converting some of the Air Force's oldest planes into target drones.

"This is significant work," said Richard Aboulafia, an analyst with the Teal Group. "Lockheed Martin, for some good reasons and some bad, hasn't done much to get it."

Aboulafia estimates that between 1,500 and 2,000 of the 3,000-plus F-16s in operation worldwide could be candidates for upgrade work.

The F-16 upgrade and modification business will generate added revenues for the contractors, but not necessarily lots of U.S. jobs.

US Air Force changes acquisitions strategy for F-16 radar modernization ....

The US Air Force is changing its acquisitions strategy for the F-16 Radar Modernization Program, which it is running as part of its F-16 Combat Avionics Programmed Extension Suite (CAPES) effort to modernize the venerable single-engine fighter.

"The USAF is contracting with Lockheed Martin to develop an AESA [active electronically scanned array] fire control radar as a CFE (Contractor Furnished Equipment) item for the F-16 platform," says Dawn Sutton, deputy director of the USAF's F-16 System Program Office (SPO).

"We defer to Lockheed Martin as to their plans on how to most appropriately meet the subject requirement. However, it's our expectation that Lockheed Martin will conduct a source selection to choose a radar vendor to meet the Air Force requirements."

EW pod for F-16 retrofit completes test programme

ITT Exelis has completed testing of its AN/ALQ-211(V)9 Advanced Integrated Defensive Electronic Warfare Suite (AIDEWS) podded electronic warfare (EW) system at Edwards Air Force Base (AFB) in California, the company announced on 19 November.

Over the past six weeks, the system was tested in an anechoic chamber to ensure its electromagnetic compatibility with other systems integrated into the aircraft and to verify that the multiple systems would not interfere with one another. According to ITT Exelis, the company opted to conduct this testing in a chamber to reduce the amount of flight time required, reducing time and cost.

Specifically, the testing was performed on multiple radio frequency systems operating simultaneously in a Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon combat aircraft carrying the AIDEWS pod. The industry team measured pod antenna patterns on the F-16, as well as system interoperability between the AIDEWS jamming pod, fire control radar and Raytheon AN/ALR-69 radar warning receiver.

... aerei di 3^ mano alla Bulgaria Bulgarian Govt to Buy Third-Hand Fighter Jets from Portugal - Report http://www.novinite.com/view_news.php?id=146529

Bulgaria's much anticipated fighter jets purchase will likely come to a disappointing end as the Bulgarian Defense Ministry has decided to buy expensive third-hand F-16s from Portugal, according to the Bulgarian press.

Bulgaria's government is thus expected to pay BGN 700 M for nine F-16s Block 15 to Portugal even though in 1999 Portugal paid twice less – BGN 268 M – to the US government for 25 second-hand F-16 planes, the Bulgarian daily Sega reported Thursday.

The Bulgarian Air Force is thus expected to get "third-hand" planes for a much higher price, the daily concludes, noting that the board numbers of the second-hand Portuguese F-16s were published at http://f-16.net, and the 9 planes destined for Bulgaria are from among the 25 planes that Portugal bought from the USA 13 years ago.

Shortly before New Year's Gen. Rumen Radev who is in charge of the working group of the Bulgarian Defense Ministry for the purchase of the jet fighters for the Bulgarian Air Force noted that the offers covering Bulgaria's requirements for the deal include new planes from Swedish producer Gripen, second-hand Eurofighters from Italy, and second-hand F-16s from Portugal.

Radev told the Presa daily that the Portuguese deal was the best option because it included everything necessary for the operation of the planes, while Gripen and Italy offered only the planes without arms and will only the most basic land equipment for their operation.

According to Radev, even though the second-hand fighter jets from Portugal are already 30-years-old, they can be used for 25 more years.

Bulgarian Defense Minister Anyu Angelov defended recently the Portuguese offer by saying that the MiG-29s of the Bulgarian Air Force were bought as second-hand planes in the 1980s, and that since planes are supposed to be modernized every 1-3 years, "it's not important when the plane was made but how much life it has."

According to Angelov, his working group will results from its negotiations with potential providers, and will report to the government by March 1, 2013, in the purchase which will be made without a tender, a decision of the Cabinet made precisely because it wanted to study second-hand purchase options.

According to the minutes from the meeting of the Bulgarian government on December 19, 2012, Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov stated that the Cabinet was only allowing the Defense Ministry to hold the talks for the purchase but it was not allocating the money or setting a deadline for the deal to be made. Borisov noted that the next government, after Bulgaria's upcoming elections in the summer of 2013, will make the decision on which offer to accept.

The Bulgarian press points out that if the Borisov Cabinet makes a decision to buy the planes but no purchase gets made, this could mean a repeat of Romania's situation when in 2010 the defense authorities in Bucharest decided to buy second-hand F-16s from the USA but the lack of funds terminated the purchase. Subsequently, Romania's current Defense Minister said in September 2012 that Romania will buy 12 second-hand F-16s from Portugal for USD 600 M without a tender.

According to the Sega daily, some of the 12 planes that Portugal has offered to Romania, have also been offered to Bulgaria, which is why the Bulgarian Defense Ministry is in a hurry to complete the deal.

According to cited sources from Bulgaria's Defense Ministry, back in 2009 the Portuguese Air Force offered on sale F-16s with the following board numbers: 15125, 15126, 15127, 15139, 15128, 15129, 15130, 15137, 15131 and 15138.

The Bulgarian Defense Ministry has asked for 6-7 one-seat fighter jets, and 2 two-seat fighter jets.

The planes in question are among the 25 F-16s Block 15 delivered to Portugal by the USA in 1999 under the Peace Atlantis II Program. Before that, they had been used by the US Air Force since 1984, and were used for 10 years, after that they were stored in the US air base Hill.

After they were bought by Portugal, the planes were modernized under the MLU (Mid-Life Update) standard.

BAE Butts Into Lockheed’s $3 Billion F-16 Servicing Work

Now, London-based BAE wants to boost international sales by taking even more of Lockheed’s F-16 business. “We’re looking at potentially where to take this next,” Herr said in a phone interview. “It’s a big opportunity for us.”

Shrinking defense budgets in the U.S. and Europe and a lack of affordable new fighter jets have heightened competition for aircraft upgrades, said Kevin Brancato, a Washington-based defense analyst at Bloomberg Government. For Lockheed, this means defending its turf from rivals that may soon include Boeing Co., the Pentagon’s No. 2 contractor.

With more than 2,200 F-16s sold outside the U.S. to countries including Egypt, Turkey, Greece, Thailand and Chile, refurbishing the jets offers lucrative opportunities for competitors to take market share away from Lockheed, Brancato said.

“Demonstrated performance is what sells, and here BAE is getting its test,” Brancato said in a phone interview. “They have a very good chance of winning further business, presumably because they’re underbidding what Lockheed is offering.”

Air Force Identifies Aviano's Missing F-16 Pilot
US and Italian search teams on Tuesday continued efforts in the Adriatic Sea to find and rescue Capt. Lucas Gruenther, the F-16 pilot from Aviano AB, Italy, who is missing after his airplane presumably went down in the water on Monday during a nighttime training mission.
Aviano officials identified Gruenther as the missing pilot on Tuesday.
He is chief of flight safety for Aviano's 31st Fighter Wing.
"We are dedicating all available resources to the search and rescue operation," said Brig. Gen Scott Zobrist, 31st FW commander, in a base release on Jan. 29.
Throughout Tuesday, more US assets joined the effort, including an Air Force HC-130 and a rotation of Navy P-3s, states the release.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with Captain Gruenther and his family," continued Zobrist.
"I am hopeful that we will bring him home safely."
After Aviano officials lost contact with Gruenther on Jan. 28, Italian aircraft and ships were quickly dispatched to his jet's last-known location: 10 nautical miles to 15 nm east of Cervia, Italy.
Italian search teams on Tuesday recovered debris in the water believed to belong to Gruenther's F-16.
