US tests new missile defense system

 

The United States has successfully tested a new ballistic missile defense interceptor, the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) said.

 

The Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) system was flight tested on board the USS Lake Erie (CG 70), resulting in “the first intercept of a short-range ballistic missile target over the Pacific Ocean” by the Navy’s newest Missile Defense interceptor, the Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) Block 1B.

 

The target missile was launched from the Pacific Missile Range Facility, located on Kauai, Hawaii, at 8:18 p.m. Hawaiian Standard Time (10:18 GMT May 10).

Aegis BMD is the sea-based midcourse component of the MDA’s Ballistic Missile Defense System and is designed to intercept and destroy short to intermediate-range ballistic missile threats.

 

The interceptor is an essential element of an anti-missile system the United States is building in and around Europe and is to be deployed in Romania by 2015.

Russia tests new missile after NATO summit

 

Russia on Wednesday staged the first successful test-launch of a new intercontinental missile designed to penetrate the defence system now being deployed by NATO despite Moscow's fierce complaints.

 

The highly-symbolic launch came just days after alliance formally activated the first stage of a missile defence shield whose deployment Russia has bitterly opposed out of fears that it may target its own vast nuclear arsenal.

Aegis Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) System, U.S.A.

 

The Aegis BMD provides warships with the capability of intercepting and destroying short and medium-range ballistic missiles.

Aegis BMD is the first component of the BMDS to receive formal certification for deployment. It is also the MDA's first missile defence system acquired by a military ally (Japan).

The US Navy's vessels currently equipped with Aegis BMDS are Ticonderoga (CG-47) Class cruisers and also Arleigh Burke (DDG-51) Class destroyers.

The variations of the Aegis BMD system currently in service are the 3.6.1 version and the 4.0.1 version. The MDA and the US Navy plan to deploy more advanced versions, such as the 5.0, 5.1 and 5.2, in the future.

The improved versions will be equipped with advanced processors and software, as well as upgraded variants of the SM-3 interceptor missile.

Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) upgrades are being integrated in to Aegis BMD ships and land-based facilities to counter evolving ballistic missile threats. Phase two development will deliver more advanced SM-3 Block IB missiles by 2015.

The missiles will be deployed at sea and on land. The land-based component of the BMDS is called as Aegis Ashore. The preliminary design review for the Aegis Ashore was concluded in August 2011.

The Aegis Ashore sites will be built at the Pacific Missile Range Facility and Romania, to deploy SM-3 IB interceptors. The land-based sites will protect Nato nations against the hostile ballistic missiles launched from the Middle East.

Phase three will involve the development of SM-3 Block IIA by 2018, for the deployment from Aegis Ashore sites in Romania and Poland, and Aegis BMD ships. Phase four will deliver SM-3 Block IIB missiles by 2020 to defend IRBMs and ICBMs.

The SM-3 is capable of intercepting ballistic missiles above the atmosphere during the midcourse phase of a hostile ballistic missile's flight. The missile is launched from the MK 41 vertical launching system (VLS) of the warships. It receives in-flight target updates from the ship.

The kinetic warhead (KW) is designed to destroy a ballistic missile's warhead with more than 130 megajoules of kinetic energy. The existing SM-3 Block IA version will be upgraded to SM-3 Block IB, SM-3 Block IIA and SM-3 Block IIB to counter future ballistic missile threats.

The SM-2 Block IV can engage the ballistic missiles within the atmosphere in the terminal phase of a missile's trajectory. The missile carries a blast fragmentation warhead. The SM-2 Block IV will be replaced with a new extended range SM-6 interceptor.

Patriot PAC-3-successful in complex ballistic missile intercept test

 

Lockheed Martin’s PAC-3 Missile successfully destroyed a tactical ballistic missile (TBM) target today at White Sands Missile Range, N.M., in an Operational Test conducted by the U.S. Army Test and Evaluation Command. The test involved three incoming targets; two Patriot-As-A-Target TBMs and one MQM-107 drone.

 

A ripple launch of two PAC-3 Missiles successfully engaged the second TBM. Preliminary data indicate all test objectives were achieved. Three additional PAC-3 tests are scheduled for the second half of 2012, including flight tests that will demonstrate the Missile Segment Enhancement (MSE) capability in both the Patriot and MEADS systems.

Most Complex Missile Defense Test Ever ....

 

The US military last week conducted its "largest, most complex missile defense flight test ever," announced the Missile Defense Agency.

Flight Test Integrated-01 was a combined developmental and operational live-fire exercise that included airmen in the 613th Air and Space Operations Center at JB Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii, and airmen, sailors, and soldiers operating in the western Pacific around the Reagan Test Site in the Kwajalein Atoll.

 

The Oct. 25 drill (Kwajalein time) involved the simultaneous engagement of three ballistic missile targets and two cruise missile targets to stress the integrated performance of the Army's Patriot Advanced Capability-3 and Terminal High Altitude Area Defense systems and the Navy's Aegis BMD element.

 

Initial indications are that THAAD "successfully intercepted" its first-ever medium-range ballistic missile target, while PAC-3 "near simultaneously destroyed" a short-range ballistic missile and a low-flying cruise missile over water, according to MDA's release.

 

Also, the USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62) "successfully engaged" a low-flying cruise missile over water and launched an SM-3 Block 1A interceptor against an SRBM.

 

However, "there was no indication" of an intercept of the latter, states the release.

The Defense Ministry plans to develop unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that are capable of detecting ballistic missiles earlier than current systems, according to government sources.

 

The domestically developed information-gathering drones will be equipped with a supersensitive infrared sensor to detect and track ballistic missiles even at low altitude.

 

The ministry decided to beef up the nation's surveillance capabilities out of concern for future ballistic missile launches by North Korea and China's accelerated military buildup.

U.S. clears sale of Lockheed missile defense system to UAE, Qatar

 

Qatar and the United Arab Emirates have requested the sale of up to $7.6 billion in Lockheed Martin Corp missile-defense systems to counter perceived threats and lower their dependence on U.S. forces, the Pentagon announced on Monday.

 

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), which oversees foreign arms sales, formally notified lawmakers on Friday that it had approved the possible sales, which come against the backdrop of heightened tensions with Iran. The notifications were posted to the agency's website late on Monday.

 

Lawmakers now have 30 days to block the potential sales although such action is rare since deals are carefully vetted with lawmakers weeks before the notifications are posted.

 

The sale is part of Washington's ongoing effort to deepen its cooperation with Gulf nations on missile defense and increase pressure on Iran over its nuclear program.

 

Lockheed told reporters in August that Saudi Arabia and its closest regional partners in the Gulf Cooperation Council had shown interest in the company's Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) weapon systems.

Patriot Air and Missile Defense System receives US Army stamp of approval

 

Raytheon Company's (NYSE: RTN) new-production Patriot Air and Missile Defense System has received the U.S. Army's final stamp of approval after undergoing stringent testing. During the testing, Patriot's performance was outstanding when subjected to challenging climatic and electromagnetic environments.

 

"This approval validates the modernized Patriot system's readiness to counter evolving threats and protect warfighters and allies in a combat situation," said Sanjay Kapoor, vice president for Integrated Air and Missile Defense at Raytheon's Integrated Defense Systems business. "This will only build on the confidence that our Patriot partners have in the system's performance and reliability, a confidence we look forward to extending to the partners who join the Patriot family."

 

Since last year, the Patriot system has undergone the U.S. Army's rigorous testing of every component of the modernized system. Patriot performance consistently exceeded expectations in all eight flight tests in a variety of terrain and weather conditions.

Lockheed Martin Demonstrates New Ground-Based Laser System in Tests Against Rockets and Unmanned Aerial System

 

Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] today announced that it has successfully demonstrated a portable, ground-based military laser system in a series of tests against representative airborne targets. Lockheed Martin developed the Area Defense Anti-Munitions (ADAM) system to provide a defense against short-range threats, such as rockets and unmanned aerial systems.

Since August, the ADAM system has successfully engaged an unmanned aerial system target in flight at a range of approximately 1.5 kilometers (0.9 miles) and has destroyed four small-caliber rocket targets in simulated flight at a range of approximately 2 kilometers (1.2 miles).

“Lockheed Martin has invested in the development of the ADAM system because of the enormous potential effectiveness of high-energy lasers,” said Doug Graham, Lockheed Martin’s vice president of advanced programs for Strategic and Missile Defense Systems. “We are committed to supporting the transition of directed energy’s revolutionary capability to the war fighter.”

Designed for short-range defense of high-value areas including forward operating bases, the ADAM system’s 10-kilowatt fiber laser is engineered to destroy targets up to 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) away. The system precisely tracks targets in cluttered optical environments and has a tracking range of more than 5 kilometers (3.1 miles). The system has been designed to be flexible enough to operate against rockets as a standalone system and to engage unmanned aerial systems with an external radar cue. The ADAM system’s modular architecture combines commercial hardware components with the company’s proprietary software in an integrated and easy-to-operate system.

“Lockheed Martin has applied its expertise as a laser weapon system integrator to provide a practical and affordable defense against serious threats to military forces and installations,” said Paul Shattuck, Lockheed Martin’s director of directed energy systems for Strategic and Missile Defense Systems. “In developing the ADAM system, we combined our proven laser beam control architecture with commercial hardware to create a capable, integrated laser weapon system.”

 

Area Defense Anti-Munitions (ADAM) system is a laser weapon system that defeats close-in improvised rocket and unmanned aerial system (UAS) threats. This ground-based, transportable system is self-contained to conduct the full engagement sequence against rockets and accepts an initial external radar cue to engage UASs.

Swarming boats operating in highly-trafficked strategic waterways will soon be easier to detect, target and engage. During a recent test, a Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) JLENS simultaneously detected and tracked double-digit swarming boats, hundreds of cars and trucks, non-swarming boats and manned and unmanned aircraft.

The swarming boats, similar to swarming boats in the inventories of hostile navies in high-threat regions of the globe, simulated a real-world scenario with a series of tactical maneuvers at low and high speeds. The aircraft and other vehicles JLENS tracked were similar to the other kinds of systems that might operate in the vicinity of busy vital waterways.

"This test proved JLENS can help keep important chokepoints free from the growing threat of swarming boats by detecting them from hundreds of miles away in a congested environment, enabling commanders to take appropriate action," said David Gulla, vice president of Global Integrated Sensors for Raytheon's Integrated Defense Systems business. "This success, which comes on the heels of a JLENS-enabled intercept of an anti-ship cruise missile, demonstrates that JLENS is ready to deploy for a Combatant Commander operational evaluation."

JLENS, an elevated, persistent over-the-horizon sensor system, uses a powerful integrated radar system to detect, track and target a variety of threats. This capability better enables commanders to defend against threats, including hostile cruise missiles, low-flying manned and unmanned aircraft, and moving surface vehicles such as boats, automobiles and trucks; and provide ascent phase detection of tactical ballistic missiles and large caliber rockets.

"JLENS' 360-degree long-range surveillance capability expands the battlepsace because JLENS can simultaneously detect and engage threats like swarming boats and anti-ship cruise missiles from up to 340 miles away," said Dean Barten, the U.S. Army's JLENS program manager.

About JLENS

 

A JLENS system, referred to as an orbit, consists of two tethered, 74-meter aerostats connected to mobile mooring stations and a communications and processing group.

The aerostats fly as high as 10,000 feet and can remain aloft and operational for up to 30 days.

One aerostat carries surveillance radar with 360-degree surveillance capability; the other aerostat carries a fire control radar.

According to research conducted by the U.S. Army's JLENS Product office, the cost of operating large, fixed-wing surveillance aircraft is 5-7 times greater than the cost of operating JLENS.

The JLENS surveillance radar can simultaneously track hundreds of threats; the fire control radar can simultaneously target dozens of threats.

BAE Systems Secures Production Contract for THAAD Interceptor Seekers

 

BAE Systems has received initial contract funding in the amount of $81 million from Lockheed Martin Corp. to begin production of 143 infrared seekers for the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) weapon system program, designed to defend U.S. and allied soldiers, military assets, and metropolitan areas from ballistic missile attack threats.

 

BAE Systems’ seeker provides the infrared imagery from the targeted warhead to the missile to guide the interceptor to its target, destroying enemy warheads through direct “hit-to-kill” technology.

 

“In what is called a ‘kinetic kill,’ our reliable seeker detects infrared radiation from the target missile and warhead and generates video guiding the interceptor to the target,” said Barry Yeadon, THAAD program manager at BAE Systems. “THAAD has a spotless flight test record of nine-for-nine intercepts. During the most recent test, two interceptors destroyed two separate targets – a challenging feat.”

Lockheed Martin, Grand Prairie, Texas, was awarded a $755,134,781 firm-fixed-price contract. The award will provide for the procurement of Patriot Advanced Capability-3, which includes support for Foreign Military Sales, and related services.

Work will be performed in Grand Prairie; Lufkin, Texas; Camden, Ark.; Chelmsford, Mass.; and Ocala, Fla.; with an estimated completion date of July 31, 2015. One bid was solicited, with one bid received.

The U.S. Army Contracting Command, Redstone Arsenal, Ala., is the contracting activity (W31P4Q-13-C-0068).
