Ha costituito in pratica l'anello di congiunzione fra il volo atmosferico ed il volo spaziale e alcuni suoi piloti, sia civili che militari, hanno ricevuto il distintivo da astronauta per aver effettuato voli a quote superiori ai 264.000 piedi. 354,200 feet : Joe Walker (NASA) 314,750 feet : Bob White (USAF) 306,900 feet : Bill Dana (NASA) 295,600 feet : Jack McKay (NASA) 285,000 feet : Bob Rushworth (USAF) 280,600 feet : Joe Engle (USAF/ANG) 280,500 feet : "Pete" Knight (USAF) 266,000 feet : Mike Adams (USAF) Vi fu però un'apparente discriminazione fra piloti militari e civili.
