The Space Force awarded four launch missions worth $385 million to SpaceX and United Launch Alliance, bringing the number of missions assigned under its heavy-lift launch contracts to seven.
Under the task orders issued March 9, ULA and SpaceX will each launch two missions.
ULA was awarded $225 million to launch and integrate the USSF-112 and USSF-87 missions on its Vulcan Centaur rockets while SpaceX was awarded $160 million to launch and integrate USSF-36 and launch NROL-69 on its Falcon 9 rockets.
The NROL-69 mission was awarded in partnership with the National Reconnaissance Office, which will separately fund integration for the mission.

Quote

At the dawn of the new space age, the United States is racing to assemble a military coalition of spacefaring nations to rival that of Operation Enduring Freedom or the Western Bloc.
Its success could reshape yet another area of military power in America’s image, bringing the same security dynamics to the cosmos that have evolved for decades on Earth.
Countries have operated military satellites, radars, and other space-related weapon systems for years.
But with a Cold War redux underway, the United States says it needs to beef up its defenses on orbit to fend off Russian and Chinese aggression in the cosmos.
American officials argue it takes a multinational team to protect international space exploration and commerce - as well as GPS and other systems that enable terrestrial ops and modern civilian life.

Cita

The commander of the Space Force’s Space Launch Delta 30 envisions Vandenberg Space Force Base, Calif., as a “national spaceport” and said the launch delta is trying to figure out how to make that dream a reality.
Vandenberg has plenty of room to grow, and the convenience of launching into certain orbits - not to mention “demand signals” from customers - suggests commercial interest in launching from the site will continue to rise, said Col. Robert A. Long, who took over command of the launch delta in June.
Long took part in a Spacepower Forum webinar by the Mitchell Institute of Aerospace Studies on Dec. 17.
At 180,000 acres, “Obviously the good thing about Vandenberg is we have plenty of land area,” Long said.
Situated where rockets can launch to the south, the base is desirable because of the efficiency of getting to polar orbits.
By launching in another direction to get to a polar orbit, companies might have to design their satellites differently based on where they launch from.
Long characterized the “performance penalty” as “less payload to orbit.”

Viene ribadita l'importanza della propulsione nucleare nelle operazioni militari nello spazio ...

Cita

Maturing nuclear thermal propulsion to maneuver satellites out of the way of attacks could also keep the U.S. apace with Chinese and Russian advancements, according to a new paper.
In the policy paper, “Maneuver Warfare in Space: The Strategic Mandate for Nuclear Propulsion,” the Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies argues that the nuclear engines are at least as safe as today’s chemical propulsion while more powerful and fuel efficient.
“In either case, the impact on our national security from not operationalizing this technology is far greater than the safety and environmental concerns that have been solved thanks to decades of research and testing,” writes author Christopher Stone, senior fellow for space studies in the institute’s Spacepower Advantage Center of Excellence.
