Poi c’era il green glow, causato dal disturbo dato dalla luminosità dei display del cruscotto che rendeva difficile il volo notturno (per il pilota di notte era come guardare attraverso una finestra sporca) e che si è affrontato introducendo nel casco la tecnologia O-led.

A quanto pare la Growth Option 1 non interessa e si va direttamente alla GO2 che ha anche più potenza disponibile per i sistemi. Non molto esaltanti le tempistiche visto che la nuova soluzione arriverebbe una decina di anni dopo averla annunciata.

Non so se stupisca di più questa tempistica lunga per un upgrade al motore (si badi bene che qui non si parla del passaggio al motore con architettura a tre flussi...) o la supercazzola su quelle brevi del caccia di sesta generazione. Di sicuro balza agli occhi il contrasto fra le due.

LM ha ottenuto contratti (e quindi soldi) anche per i tanti upgrade necessari a risolvere le varie criticità tecniche.

Questa non lo è.  Si tratta di normale obsolescenza di un componente che quando è nato il velivolo era anche adeguato, ma che ora è rimasto indietro rispetto alle realizzazioni su pod.

Certo, il velivolo è andato lungo nei tempi, ma è normale che si debba congelare una configurazione e poi procedere a metterla in linea andando quindi per step, mentre intanto la tecnologia va avanti in modo meno discontinuo.

Quindi mi pare scontato che chi vuole l’upgrade dei velivoli già consegnati debba anche pagarlo, mentre chi riceverà velivoli nuovi si suppone che da un certo momento in poi li riceva con l’AEOTS e che paghi anche di meno per averli.

Il nuovo EOTS,  come il nuovo DAS, rientrano nel processo di riduzione costi avviato da LM, ma questo non è estraneo a un parallelo miglioramento qualitativo dei sistemi.

This modification increases the ceiling and scope of the contract to include the procurement of Lot 12-14 Generation 3 helmet mounted displays in support of the F-35 Lightning II program. 
Work will be performed in Fort Worth, Texas, and is expected to be completed in December 2020. 
No funds are being obligated at time of award; funds will be obligated on individual orders as they are issued. 
The Naval Air Systems Command, Patuxent River, Maryland, is the contracting activity.

Beh, l'obiettivo è ambizioso in partenza.

Comunque pare che si sia sulla buona strada, Eglin AFB quest'estate ha indicato un MC rate del 77% sui propri Lightning:

La Marina USA esulta per il risultato raggiunto ... anche se evita di citare gli F-35C ... forse perché il numero dei velivoli di tale tipo che ha, al momento, in dotazione è ancora piuttosto basso ai fini di una corretta valutazione ...

Italy has become the first F-35 operator to deploy the fifth-generation fighter on a NATO mission, sending the aircraft to perform air policing in Iceland.
Six Italian F-35s touched down at Keflavik airfield on Sept. 25 for the temporary deployment.
Unlike the Baltic Air Policing mission, which is supported year-round by NATO air forces, the Icelandic mission usually lasts several weeks and occurs three-four times each year. 
The F-35s are due to make Iceland their home for three weeks.
According to NATO’s Air Command, the deployment by Italy is the country’s fifth detachment to Iceland and the second this year; Rome previously provided Eurofighter Typhoons for the mission.
“The Italian Air Force detachment is scheduled to work with the controllers at the Combined Air Operations Center in Uedem, Germany, and the Control and Reporting Center at Keflavik, Iceland,” NATO Air Command officials said.
No details of the deployment had been released by the Italian air force or defense ministry at the time of writing (*).
The deployment was supported by one of Italy’s Boeing KC-767 tanker aircraft, a C-130J airlifter, and a P-72 maritime patrol derivative of the ATR-72 providing cover in the event of an ejection over water.
The F-35s will perform a series of familiarization flights to achieve certification for the mission. 
Italy declared its F-35s operational last November, becoming the fourth air arm to do so after the U.S. Marine Corps, the U.S. Air Force and the Israeli Air Force.
Iceland does not have an air force, and the U.S. stopped basing fighters on the island in 2006, prompting the government in Reykjavik to request occasional fighter deployments starting in 2008. 
NATO describes the mission as a “peacetime preparedness mission,” helping the country to “stay prepared, to monitor and to manage its airspace in peacetime.”
The UK Royal Air Force will deploy Typhoons to the island later this year.

The JSE simulations project characteristics such as weather, geography and range, allowing test pilots to prove the aircraft's "full capabilities against the full range of required threats and scenarios," according to a 2015 Director, Operational Test & Evaluation (DOT&E) report.
