A logica, all'Italia, converrebbe proseguire "spedita" col programma F-35

Second Round Of F-35 Maintenance Work Contracted ...

Tony Osborne - Aerospace Daily & Defense Report  (AW&ST) - Feb. 13, 2019

LONDON - Industry in Denmark, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, and the UK have secured component repair work for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.
Work assignments for the maintenance, repair and overhaul work on some 400 repairable items including avionics, life support systems, landing gear, pumps and power systems for the aircraft was issued by the F-35 Joint Program Office (JPO) on Feb. 12.
Under current plans, the F-35 enterprise is awarding contracts for more than 770 repairable items on the aircraft.
The first batch of 65 of these contracts was issued in late 2016 for so-called high-value electrical components, fuel, mechanical and hydraulic systems, and ejection seats.
Having secured the lion’s share of the first round of contracts, British industry has also grabbed a significant proportion of work in the second, British government officials have confirmed
This will lead to the creation of additional jobs at Sealand Support Services Limited (SSSL), the joint venture established between BAE Systems Northrop Grumman and the Defense Electronics and Components Agency (DECA).
It will carry out the component repair work at its facility in Sealand, Wales, to support European operators of the aircraft.
The MRO work is due to start at Sealand in 2021.
The additional work is said to be worth around £500 million ($643.6 million).
“From 2021, there will be hundreds of F-35s flying across the globe and SSSL will be central to sustaining operations in the European region and around the world, providing essential MRO services,” SSSL managing director Rear Adm. Rick Thompson said.
“These global repair assignments will get F-35 parts into the hands of maintainers faster so they can fix and sustain aircraft more efficiently,” said Vice Adm. Mat Winter, the F-35 program executive officer.
The contracts are part of the F-35’s Global Support Solution. The JPO says that participating nations have been provided with requirements outlining repair needs for F-35 component workload.
Each country was then given the opportunity to work with industry to submit responses.
Regional considerations such as forward basing, aircraft phasing, and transportation have contributed to assignment decisions.
Work assignments will be reviewed and updated as required by the program, the JPO says.
Under current plans, the assignments awarded in Europe will support the worldwide fleet.
But as F-35 operations in the Asia-Pacific region pick up pace in the mid-2020s, component repair support services will also be established in that region.
So far, the JPO has issued assignments to industry in Australia, Japan and South Korea.
BAE also picked up F-35 overall component work for its facilities in Australia.

The Boeing KC-46A Pegasus air tanker refuelled a Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II for the first time over California.
The tanker connected to the fighter aircraft with its refuelling boom on 22 January, marking the first time the Pegasus has refuelled a stealth aircraft, says the US Air Force.
The KC-46A will also have to prove it can refuel the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor and Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit.

Russia to Goldfein: If F-35s Enter Our Airspace, “Remember Vietnam” ...

Quote

The Russian Embassy in the US tweeted a cryptic message to the US Air Force and Chief of Staff Gen. David Goldfein on Friday, pairing a threat against Joint Strike Fighters that enter Russian airspace with propaganda-like video footage.
The tweet stated that if the country was to detect an F-35 Lightning II within its airspace, it would tell Goldfein to “remember Vietnam.”
It proceeded to caution that one of the Lockheed-built fighters would “never be alone.”
The attached video included footage of an aircraft being shot down. The message and video weren’t cross-posted to any of the embassy’s social media sites, and Goldfein didn’t immediately respond.
As of press time, the tweet had been shared hundreds of times, and the video racked up more than 50,000 views.

https://www.janes.com/article/86857/avalon-2019-lockheed-martin-aims-for-reduction-in-cost-of-f-35-flying-hours-lower-sustainment-costs

The 388th FW debuted the F-35A Lightning II at Red Flag in 2017 and came away with a 20:1 kill ratio. The jet is even more capable now, pilots say.

“We have an upgraded software suite that has improved our sensor fusion. We’ve got an expanded flying envelope with more maneuverability. We have the ability to employ more weapons, including the 25-mm cannon,” said Lt. Col. Yosef Morris, 4th Fighter Squadron commander. “When you couple those things with the two years we’ve had to improve our tactics, we’re bringing a much more lethal F-35A to this Red Flag and ultimately to the battlefield.”

U.S. Considers Up To 72 New F-15s Or F-16s ...
Bill Sweetman - Aerospace Daily & Defense Report (AW&ST) - Nov. 19, 2015

LONDON — The U.S. Air Force may solicit bids for 72 new Boeing F-15s, Lockheed Martin F-16s or even Boeing F/A-18E/Fs as budget issues put planned production rates for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter out of reach, according to senior service and industry officials at the Defense IQ International Fighter Conference here.
F-15s and F-16s are now expected to serve until 2045, when an all-new aircraft will be ready, and plans to modernize F-16s with active electronically scanned array radars and other improvements are being revived.
The conference was run under Chatham House rules that prohibit identifying specific speakers.
The U.S. Air Force “is struggling to afford 48 F-35s a year” for the first years of full-rate production, a senior officer says.
The program of record shows the service buying 60 aircraft in 2020, rising to 80 per year soon after that.
Consequently, F-15s and F-16s will serve longer and will outnumber F-35s and F-22s through the late 2020s.
The service is looking at a three-tier force, with 300 F-16s and some F-15s being modernized “to augment the F-35 and F-22 in a high-end fight” and others assigned to low-end operations, while the contemplated 72-aircraft buy (an Air Force wing) would sustain force numbers and provide additional modern aircraft.
Although “the last time we looked, this was more expensive than buying F-35s in bulk,” the senior leader says, the issue is being re-examined.
An industry official confirms the Air Force has asked for pricing data on new F-15s along with life-extension and upgrade options, including fitting in-service aircraft with new wings and rebuilt fuselages.
The U.S. Air Force activity parallels U.S. Navy fleet planning; the Navy, likewise, is considering reductions in the planned F-35C production rate to fund life-extension efforts for the Super Hornet.
The production phase of the Combat Avionics Program Extension Suite (Capes) upgrade for the U.S. Air Force F-16 force was canceled under the fiscal 2015 budget, but development of its major elements is continuing for Taiwan, with South Korea and Singapore expected to join the project.
The U.S. Air Force plans to seek money to upgrade its fleet in small batches, according to the service leader.
Also under consideration is a plan to augment U.S. Air Force electronic attack capabilities by fitting some F-15Es with a version of the Raytheon Next Generation Jammer pod, the Air Force leader said.
