Europe’s bid to retain independent, cost-competitive access to space in a launch market disrupted by US start-up SpaceX has been given solid financial momentum with formal contracts to develop the heavyweight Ariane 6 and light Vega C rockets.

The €2.4 billion ($2.7 billion) contract for the two variants of the modular Ariane 6, to fly from 2020 with full operations from 2023, includes some €680 million to reach a preliminary design review in mid-2016.

Prime contractor Airbus Safran Launchers says the total cost of developing the launcher, including solid fuel boosters to be shared with Vega C and some €400 million in industrial investment, will be about €3 billion.

Missione Ariane VA241 ... che cosa è andato storto ...

Arianespace vient de livrer les conclusions de l'enquête mise en place après la dernière mission du lanceur lourd européen, durant laquelle une déviation trajectoire avait entraîné la mise à poste des charges utiles sur une orbite trop inclinée.

Alain Charmeau, le président d’ArianeGroup, en avait touché deux mots aux députés le 21 février à l’Assemblée nationale : la cause de la défaillance du lanceur Ariane 5 ECA lors du vol VA 241 du 25 janvier dernier est désormais « parfaitement » identifiée, et la commission d’enquête indépendante mise en place dès le lendemain de l’incident, sous l’égide de l’Agence spatiale européenne , a rendu ses conclusions et ses recommandations le 22 février.

D’après le communiqué d’Arianespace diffusé ce 23 février (*), l’enquête a démontré que « l’anomalie de trajectoire résulte d’une valeur erronée dans la spécification de mise en œuvre des deux centrales inertielles du lanceur.

The new Spanish Prime Minister has announced his intention to appoint Spanish ESA astronaut Pedro Duque as Minister for Science, Innovation and Universities.

“It is a great privilege to be able to transfer my experience as an astronaut, project manager and space sector CEO to my new role in the government,” says Duque.

“I am looking forward to increasing awareness in science and technology among Spanish citizens.”

The first direct image of a black hole was captured by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT). 
Using an array of radio telescopes during a 2017 global campaign, astronomers observed the black hole at the centre of Messier 87, a massive galaxy in the nearby Virgo galaxy cluster. 
Heino Falcke, Chair of the EHT Science Council, and Monika Moscibrodzka, astrophysicist at Radboud University, present the discovery.
