Arriva il super uragano!

Messaggi raccomandati

East Coast Bases Recover from Sandy ....

Airmen at Dover AFB, Del., and JB McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, N.J., were busy on Oct. 30 cleaning up debris and fallen trees and dealing with property damage, minor flooding, and power outages after Superstorm Sandy hit both installations on the previous day.

Dover officials expected the base to return to normal operations on Oct. 31, while McGuire leadership anticipated that "most operations" would resume by then.

"We're just thankful our folks weathered the storm without serious injury and that we continue to support recovery operations in the local area by hosting the FEMA team here," said Col. John Wood, McGuire commander, in a base release.

http://www.mcguire.af.mil/library/biographies/bio.asp?id=14584

Officials at both installations credited diligent preparation with preventing more serious damage and disruptions.

For example, already on the morning of Oct 30, Dover's airmen had reopened the base's airfield, according to a Dover release.

"One of the main things we learned is not to worry about exactly where the storm is going to hit," said SMSgt. John Tingle, 436th Civil Engineer Squadron operations flight superintendent at Dover.

"We need to prepare for the worst case scenario possible . . . and recover the base through any challenge."

Travelers on Delta Airlines look at a departure screen Monday, Oct. 29, 2012, in Detroit.

Dozens of departing flights have been canceled at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport as a looming superstorm locks down flights to the East Coast.

Hurricane Sandy continued on its path Monday, as the storm forced the shutdown of mass transit, schools and financial markets, sending coastal residents fleeing, and threatening a dangerous mix of high winds and soaking rain.

Air Mobility at its Finest ....

Twelve C-17s and five C-5s manned with Active Duty, Air National Guard, and Air Force Reserve Command crews on Nov. 1 began what Pentagon Press Secretary George Little dubbed a "significant airlift event" to help civilian authorities restore power in the Superstorm Sandy-ravaged northeastern United States.

Mobility airmen and machines from 12 bases across the nation started arriving at March ARB, Calif., on Thursday morning local time to pick up approximately 10 civilian power experts and 632 short tons of equipment and supplies, including 69 vehicles from the Southern California Edison Utility company, for transport to Stewart ANG Base in Newburgh, N.Y.

Among the vehicles were 10 cherry picker trucks, four line trucks, a flat-bed digger, eight "trouble trucks" and a mobile command center, Little told reporters.

Once offloaded at Stewart, the vehicles would move out to support the power-restoration activities in the New York area.

"This operation demonstrates the strength of our air mobility system, said Col. James Finney, vice commander of March's 452nd Air Mobility Wing, a Reserve unit.

He added, "By leveraging our reserve component, in partnership with our Active Duty airmen, we are able to provide rapid response to national requirements.

This is Total Force global mobility at its finest."

Back from Sandy Safehavens ....

Most of the aircraft evacuated from several Air Force bases on the US East Coast, such as Dover AFB, Del., and JB McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, N.J., to avoid Superstorm Sandy have since returned home, representatives from those installations told the Daily Report.

For example, as of Oct. 31, six KC-135 tankers from the New Jersey Air National Guard's 108th Wing had returned to McGuire, said a base spokesman on Nov. 1.

They had flown to McConnell AFB, Kan., on Oct. 27 to avoid Sandy's wrath.

Similarly safely back at McGuire are KC-10s of the 305th Air Mobility Wing, said the spokesman.

Seven of them had sought shelter at Grand Forks AFB, N.D., while one each went to Seymour Johnson AFB, N.C., and Homestead ARB, Fla.

McGuire officials had also dispatched five of the 305th AMW's C-17s to MacDill AFB, Fla., while two moved to JB Charleston, S.C.

Five of those C-17s returned home on Oct. 31, while the remaining two were conducting missions away from McGuire, said the spokesman.
