Residents oppose Olympics missile plan at the High Court

Residents of the Fred Wigg Tower in Leytonstone, east London, are fighting to prevent the ground-based air defence system being deployed above their heads.

They are applying for permission to seek judicial review on the grounds their human rights have been breached because they were not consulted fairly and properly over the proposals.

They also want an injunction prohibiting deployment until their legal challenge is heard.

Ministry of Defence officials want to deploy the weapons across six sites in the capital.

Altri uomini ... Additional military support to Olympics security

Defence Secretary Philip Hammond has confirmed that an additional 3,500 military personnel will be deployed as part of the security arrangements for the 2012 Olympic Games.

This will bring the total number of military personnel, from all three Services and including reservists, contributing to the safety and security of the Games to 17,000.

Beh! ... Le figuraccie non sono un'esclusiva italiana Firm at centre of Olympic security shambles 'has seen fee rise by £53m’

Confidential Home Office documents seen by The Daily Telegraph show that G4S has had its fee for managing civilian security staff for the Games rise from £7.3 million to £60 million.

The fee the company takes for running its Olympic office has risen more than 10 times faster than its spending on recruitment, the documents show.

The firm’s failure to provide enough staff for Olympic sites this week forced ministers to assign an extra 3,500 Armed Forces personnel to security work for the Games.

The new military deployment yesterday led to intense scrutiny of the contract and prompted calls for G4S to be banned from future government work.

La HMS Ocean?! :woot:

a me sembrano matti.

RAF fighter jet scrambled after air traffic controllers lose contact

Hanno fatto la prova generale

An RAF fighter jet tasked to defend the Olympics against terror attack was scrambled for the first time today to intercept a passenger plane.

The Typhoon roared into the skies from RAF Northolt in north west London after air traffic controllers lost contact with a commercial airliner carrying hundreds of holidaymakers.

A second RAF warplane was kept on standby on the runway.

The Thomas Cook scheduled flight, travelling from Tunisia to Glasgow, sparked the emergency call-out shortly before 11.30am.

The plane lost communications with the aviation authorities as it headed north over the French coastline.

A Ministry of Defence spokesman said: 'We can confirm that one Typhoon launched. This was in response to a commercial aircraft that was out of communication with air traffic control services.

'Communications were quickly restored; no further action was required.'

The £125million Typhoon had only left the runway for a few seconds before contact was re-established with the captain and his crew.

But the security alert highlighted the tensions surrounding defending the Olympics from terrorists - and the speed at which the jets can respond to an emergency.

RAF Typhoon scrambles for second intercept in London Olympics No-Fly Zone

On Aug. 3, at 16.49 local time, a Royal Air Force Typhoon was scrambled for the second time since a No-Fly Zone was established, from RAF Northolt, North West London.

Eye witnesses stated that the fighter jet took off and performed a near vertical climb out from the base. Whilst the Typhoon thundered into the late afternoon skies a second taxied to the end of the runway as a spare.

The target aircraft was a Boeing 737 business jet, serial number N444HE, registered to Wells Fargo Bank, which was cruising at 36,000 feet, when the Typhoon arrived on its left hand side for visual identification and escort.

From the end of the runway to the wing of the target the Typhoon took only 3.5 minutes!

The fighter jet on QRA (Quick Reaction Alert) was scrambled after the B737 failed to respond to the Air Traffic Control calls on the radio.

After a few minutes the Typhoon broke away from the target and requested a bit of general handling to burn fuel before returning to RAF Northolt.
