Iran: Obama a Pentagono, no invio terza portaerei nel golfo

As Obama Preaches Patience, Mattis Prepares for War With Iran

Gen. James Mattis wanted to send a third aircraft-carrier group to the Persian Gulf earlier this year. ... The four-star Marine Corps general and CentCom commander believed the display could have deterred Iran from further escalating tensions, according to U.S. military officials familiar with his thinking.

...

But the president wanted to focus military resources on new priorities like China, and Mattis was told a third carrier group was not available to be deployed to the Gulf.

due notizie dall'Iran:

Iran Recalls Its Ambassador to Azerbaijan

The move has allegedly been made in response to insults against Iran’s spiritual leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei during a protest in front of the Iranian embassy in Baku.

Bahrami is expected to leave the country “for consultations” on Tuesday and the date of his return is unknown.Ties between Tehran and Baku have deteriorated recently.

In February and March, Azerbaijan’s Ministry of National Security carried out several clandestine operations to reveal Iranian spies and intelligence agents in Baku preparing sabotage and terrorist actions.

Iran has accused Azerbaijan, which borders Iran and has friendly relations with the United States and Israel, of colluding with the Israeli intelligence in the killing of an Iranian nuclear scientist in January.

Tehran has also blasted Baku over media reports speculating that Azerbaijan may have been in talks on leasing its airfields to Israel for a possible airstrike against Iranian nuclear facilities.

The last time Iranian authorities recalled their ambassador from Baku was during the visit of Israeli President Shimon Peres to Azerbaijan in 2009.

IAEA chief says nears deal with Iran ahead of 6-power talks

The U.N. nuclear watchdog chief said on Tuesday he expected to sign a deal with Iran soon to ease investigation into suspected work on atom bombs, potentially brightening prospects for big-power talks with Tehran to stop a drift towards conflict.

Israel said to escalate covert operations

The military says it has also stepped up security for senior officers and military delegations traveling abroad amid intelligence that Iran and its key Arab proxy, Hezbollah in Lebanon, are plotting attacks on such targets, The Jerusalem Post reports.

"You almost won't find a point in time where something isn't happening somewhere in the world," Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz, the armed forces chief of staff, observed recently. "I'm escalating all those special operations."

Iran has 'absolute right' to enrichment

"Iran declared its readiness to address the issue of 20-percent enrichment and came with its own five-point plan, including their assertion that we recognise their right to enrichment," the P5+1's representative, EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, said in a separate news conference prior to Jalili's.

Iran's counter-proposal included a reference to a religious edict Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, made against possessing nuclear weapons, and the respect of NPT members' right to enrichment.

It also included non-nuclear issues, such as energy cooperation and regional security topics.

Jalili said the two days of talks in Baghdad in which the P5+1 unsuccessfully tried to coax Iran to accepting a number of incentives in return for halting 20 percent enrichment and other aspects of its nuclear programme were "lengthy and detailed, but unfinished."

"We had serious and fundamental talks" during which Iran made "serious proposals" to the world powers, he said.

IAEA finds higher uranium trace at Iran site

VIENNA - UN nuclear inspectors have found traces of uranium in an Iranian underground site refined to a somewhat higher level than the enrichment work that is normally carried out there, a Vienna-based diplomat said on Friday.

The diplomat, who declined to be identified, said the higher enrichment level detected was believed to be "within variation" of the usual activity at the Fordow facility, suggesting it was not a big difference and would still be far away from potential weapons grade material.

Enriched uranium can be used to fuel power plants, which is Iran's stated aim, or provide material for bombs, if refined much further, which the West suspects may be Iran's ultimate goal. Iran denies that.

Iran/nucleare: Aiea, scoperte tracce uranio arricchito oltre 20%

Iran downplays UN find, media wary of Moscow talks

Higher than expected traces of enriched uranium "are a normal technical issue that is being investigated by (IAEA) experts," Iran's envoy to the International Atomic Energy Agency Ali Asghar Soltanieh was quoted as telling the official IRNA news agency.

The agency report said that the traces found at the Fordo site, inside a mountain bunker near Qom, were of uranium enriched to purities of 27 percent. Previously, the highest level recorded by the agency in Iran was 20 percent.

The West fears that Iran could be covertly aiming to enrich uranium towards the 90 percent needed to develop atomic bombs, a claim Tehran vehemently denies.

  • 2 settimane dopo...

According to informed sources, 90,000 forces from the four countries will take part in the land and sea wargames due to be held in Syria.

A sum of 400 warplanes and 1,000 tanks will also be used in the exercises.

ABU DHABI: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) should be able to export nearly half of its crude without using the Strait of Hormuz for the first time from early July, with a new pipeline expected to pump a million barrels to the Gulf of Oman on Thursday, three industry sources said.

The strategic bypass pipeline allows the UAE to pump oil from fields in the west of the country to its eastern port of Fujairah, ending the OPEC producer's total dependence on a narrow shipping route out of the Gulf which Iran has threatened to block as western sanctions on its oil exports tighten.

The new pipeline has a nameplate capacity of around 1.5 million barrels per day (bpd), compared to total UAE exports of around 2.4 million bpd, but sources say it can carry over 2 million bpd.
