Orbital Sciences sues ULA over RD-180 engine exclusivity clause ....

While Orbital Sciences Corporation remains officially upbeat about its supply Russian NK-33 moon rocket engines avaialble to be refurbished to AJ-26 standard, it is known to be seeking a larger engine for later versions of its Antares launch vehicle.

In doing so, it found itself stymied by United Launch Alliance's contractural exclusivity clause from getting its hands on the 933,000lb thrust RD Amross RD-180 engines which are more than twice as powerful as the 400,000lb thust AJ-26.

Il fallito lancio del vettore "Proton" .... il commento di AW&ST ....

Proton Failure Sets Back Russian Space Program ....

Any launch vehicle that flies as often as Russia’s Proton is bound to have its share of mishaps. The venerable heavy-lifter has flown 388 missions since its first in 1965, 45 of which have been deemed total or partial failures.

But the Proton M/Block DM-03 that veered off course and destroyed three Russian Glonass M navigation satellites in a fiery explosion near its Baikonur Cosmodrome launch pad July 2 comes at a particularly vulnerable moment for Russia’s space program, which has suffered a spate of launch vehicle failures in recent years, including five in the past 30 months.

Proton M failure flags up unreliability of Russian space programme ....

The post-mortem is under way on the spectacular 2 July Proton M rocket failure at Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, which destroyed the launch vehicle and its payload of three of Russia's Glonass navigation satellites.

But while it may be months before the cause of the incident is determined, what is certain even today is that the reliability of the Proton M rocket - a mainstay of Russia's space programme - lags far behind its Western peers.

But when Russian rockets blew themselves to smithereens during the Cold War, usually there was no public acknowledgement of the failure by Soviet officials, who preferred to conceal their embarrassments.

The most notable example was in July 1969 when a huge Moon rocket known as the N-1, but called “the J vehicle” by the CIA because it launched from Complex J, rose off its pad a few hundred meters and then fell back onto it and exploded with the force of a small nuclear bomb.

The devastation from that failure was readily visible on reconnaissance satellite imagery.

Il fallito lancio del vettore "Proton" .... le cause ....

Proton crash due to 'incorrectly installed' angular sensors ....

The crash of a Proton-M at Baikonur, Kazakhstan, on 2 July was traced to incorrect installation of angular rate sensors, according to Russian space agency Roscosmos.

Investigators going over the wreckage immediately discovered that three of the rocket's six angular sensors, crucial for maintaining correct trajectory, were installed upside-down.

Incorrectly installed angular rate sensors on the first stage of a Russian Proton M/Block DM-03 rocket most likely caused the vehicle to crash seconds after its July 2 launch, according to a government investigation published by Russian space agency Roscosmos July 18.

Quer pasticciaccio brutto der motore russo .....

The future of one of Russia's most renowned space firms is in jeopardy, with the weight of Western sanctions, economic crisis and industrial decay coming to bear.

In many ways, the Russians brought this on themselves.

For nearly 20 years, NPO Energomash has produced its venerable liquid fuel RD-180 rocket engine exclusively for export to US space launch provider United Launch Alliance (ULA) to power its Atlas V rocket.

That was until last May, when Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, angered by Western sanctions against Russia for the annexation of Crimea two months earlier, declared Russia would ban exports of the engines for use in military launches.
