AgustaWestland to begin AW189 SAR push in August ....

 

AgustaWestland will shortly begin a year-long certification campaign for the search and rescue variant of its developmental AW189 super-medium helicopter, based at its Yeovil, UK site.

The Anglo-Italian manufacturer will utilise one of its prototype aircraft for the effort, which will arrive in Yeovil later in August ....

HELITECH: Certification nears for AW189 as backlog rises ....

 

AgustaWestland is closing in on certification for its 8t AW189 as it eyes first delivery of the super-medium type by year-end.

Roberto Garavaglia, senior vice-president strategy and business development at the airframer, says test flights have now ended and “just paperwork” remains to be finalised.

First production AW189 makes maiden flight ....

 

The first production example of AgustaWestland's new 8t-class AW189 helicopter performed its maiden sortie on 10 October ahead of year-end delivery to Bristow Helicopters.

Two further AW189s are under assembly at the airframer's plant in Vergiate, Milan.

Certification is still on track, says AgustaWestland.

Finalmente in servizio ... con Bristow Helicopters nel ruolo SAR ...

 

Bristow Helicopters has finally begun search and rescue (SAR) operations with Leonardo’s late-running AgustaWestland AW189.

The super-medium twin was due to have entered service on behalf of the UK’s Maritime and Coastguard Agency in 2015, but certification delays forced the operator to instead use additional Sikorsky S-92s as well as AW139s.

Leonardo Helicopters will shortly revise downwards the official fuel consumption figure of its AgustaWestland AW189 super-medium-twin.

Based on operational feedback and information collated via flight-recorder and helicopter usage monitoring system data, the new figure will show an improvement of between 4-7%, depending on the mission profile, it says.

The manufacturer has conducted a series of test flights to validate the figure in conjunction with GE Aviation, which supplies the helicopter’s CT7 engines.

Aneto ... un nuovo motore francese per il '189' ...

 

Safran Helicopter Engines has unveiled a new family of turboshaft powerplants in the 2,500-3,000shp (1,860-2,240kW) range, with Leonardo Helicopters the first customer for the Aneto on an updated variant of its AW189.

The French engine specialist has been working on a new model in the space above 2,000shp since its acquisition of Rolls-Royce's 50% share of the military RTM322 programme in 2013.

"It is a complete family; we are not launching one engine, but a complete family of engines to address the market requirements," says Florent Chauvancy, Safran vice-president of heavy helicopter engine programmes.

Considerato il range di potenze è effettivamente una risposta all' Honeywell-P&W T900 e al General Electric T901 (ex HPW3000 e GE3000) attualmente in sviluppo, ma questa frase...

The Aneto engines offer more power – nearly 2,500shp (1,860kW) each against 1,980shp for the CT7 – but at the cost of slightly higher fuel consumption.

 

Mah, magari non ci sarà una migrazione, ma questo non mi sembra esattamente un motivo per non far cambiare idea a chi ha già ordinato l'elicottero col T700, specie se come affermato non ci sarebbe variazione di prezzo per 500 cavalli in più...a motore.

Secondo Safran il consumo specifico calerà del 15% e quindi per consumare di più bisognerebbe necessariamente chiedere al motore quei 500 cavalli in più.

A parità di potenza invece i consumi sarebbero minori.

Più che altro, siccome il 189 non è altro che un 149 civile, e che dalle parti dinamiche di quest'ultimo partiranno a realizzare il sostituto del Mangusta, non è che sarebbe opportuno farci un pensierino di montare un motore nuovo su un elicottero nuovo, in modo da evitare di ripetere errori gia fatti in passato?

In Australia ...

 

CHC Group said it will be the first helicopter operator to introduce the Leonardo Helicopters super-medium AW189 into Australia.

The three AW189s will be flown from CHC’s Karratha base on behalf of Woodside to support its operations on the North West Shelf starting this month.

The twin-engine AW189 can be configured to carry up to 19 passengers and will provide transfer flights to Woodside’s installations.
