T-X Award May Slip to Spring ...
Although “we were shooting for the end of the year” to award the T-X contract, Bunch said the contract will likely slip to the spring of 2018.
This is not driven by the continuing resolution, but the regular tasks of properly evaluating the bids.
“I do not see” the delay pushing against later program milestones, he said, but “we’re very focused in getting it right,” because a protest would add significant delay.
“It’s event-driven,” he added.

Un nuovo sedile eiettabile, ancor più efficiente e sicuro di quelli attualmente installati sui T-38, per i futuri T-X ...

In the late 2000s, the Air Force tapped British ejection-seat maker Martin-Baker to upgrade the Air Education and Training Command’s (AETC's) entire operational fleet of about 450 Talons with a modern Mk. 16 system.
Martin-Baker completed the installations in 2014.
Before that upgrade, they had all been outfitted with a 1960s-era, Northrop-built model.
--- --- ---
The new Mk16 is a huge improvement on the legacy Northrop-made seat, accommodating more pilots on both ends of the height and weight spectrum and providing crews with a “zero-zero” escape system designed to safely extract pilots from emergencies in stationary aircraft on the ground as well as in the air.
The automatic ejection sequence deconflicts the seats, and leg restraints keep limbs in a safe position.
Those details can mean life or death for the pilot.
Now, Martin-Baker is offering its newest Mk. 18 seat to the industry teams vying to build the new T-X, according to Andrew Martin, the company’s vice president of business development and marketing.

Entro l'estate ...

Wilson believes the Air Force will be ready to award a contract for the T-X program sometime during the next few months.
“As I understand it, we are still on track to make that decision this summer, but they’ve got all their proposals in and they’re in the proposal evaluation phase,” she said.
“I intentionally don’t ask the specifics for evaluation of proposals, but they’ve told me that they’re on time for a summer decision. So summer means when? June, July, maybe August.”

Il mese di Giugno è ormai passato ... vedremo dunque se accadrà in Luglio ...

June 11, 2018: Any minute now, the Air Force is set to finally conclude its almost quixotic quest to replace the nearly 60-year-old, supersonic T-38 Talon trainer, by announcing a winner of its T-X advanced trainer competition
With luck, USAF pilots will be preparing for fighter and bomber duty in the new airplane within six years.
Everyone with an interest in Air Force pilot training has their fingers crossed that this time it will happen.
Prior to this competition, which started in 2013, each time the service conducted an analysis of alternatives (AoA), began to talk with industry about the art of the possible, and gear up for a contract, the T-38 replacement program was felled by budget cuts or some other hiccup.
Then the AOAs got stale, the Air Force lost focus, and the whole process had to start over again. Depending on how you count, this T-X contest is about the fourth time USAF has tried to replace this T-38.

With the U.S. Air Force having received final bids from industry, the service is now poised to award a contract for its 350-plane next-generation trainer fleet in just a few weeks.
An Air Force official, speaking on background, said the service expects to award the contract by the end of the fiscal year - in other words, before Sept. 30.
Many have speculated that the days before the Air Force Association’s annual conference, being held Sept. 17-19 outside of Washington, would be a potential time for an announcement to come.
However, a source with knowledge of the situation said the current plan is to make the announcement after AFA concludes, likely the week of Sept. 24.
If true, it could create an awkward environment at the event, where senior leaders will have to duck commenting on the soon-to-come T-X winner.

AETC Boss: T-X Decision is “Imminent” .....

The commander of Air Education and Training Command said the contract award for the Air Force’s next-generation trainer is “imminent.”
The long-anticipated award to replace the service’s 60-year-old T-38 aircraft is already more than half a year late.
Speaking to reporters during a media roundtable on Tuesday, Lt. Gen. Steven Kwast said the Air Force is still working to make sure “we’ve dotted all the i’s and crossed all the t’s and done [our] due diligence [to have] a thoughtful process to make sure the future of training is maximized.”
The Air Force won’t name the companies that tendered offers, but Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and Leonardo of Italy all say they are still in, along with a few long shot contenders.
Regardless of which platform is chosen, Kwast said the T-X will be a game-changer, bringing “more agility and flexibility” to USAF pilot training.
With a 21st century trainer, the Air Force will be able to “modify the training environment to accommodate the many different attributes we want to teach,” he said, adding the service will no longer be “stuck to the old steam dial we talked about in the past, where it’s just one airspeed altimeter and not much else.”
