Air Force bases along the Gulf of Mexico are preparing for twin tropical storm systems that are expected to make landfall as hurricanes within the next several days.
Tropical Storm Laura, as well as a tropical depression likely to strengthen into Tropical Storm Marco, could grow into a rare case of two tropical cyclones to barrel through the Gulf of Mexico at the same time, according to the National Weather Service.
They are slated to strike Florida, Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, Texas, and Puerto Rico during the week of Aug. 23.
Wind and water could smack communities in the Florida Panhandle that have barely started rebuilding from other recent storms.
Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla., was decimated by Category 5 Hurricane Michael in 2018 and is now staring down new potential threats.

USAF ... un preoccupato CSM Brown lancia l'allarme ... ?

Quote

The Air Force has a window of opportunity to change and it must do so quickly, because “our advantage as a nation, as an Air Force, as a joint team, is eroding,” Chief of Staff Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr. said Aug. 29, noting the service this week will release a paper called, “Accelerate Change or Lose.”
The Air Force has been engaged in conflict—mainly in the Middle East - for the last 30 years, he explained, while “at the same time, our adversaries, …China and Russia, have done things to accelerate and or move to impact our advantage. And so, our advantage is eroding, so that’s why I say accelerate change or lose,” Brown said during a speech at the virtual National Guard Association of the United States conference.
The potential consequences of not adapting are dire, Brown said: “Look at losing a great power competition. Look at losing a high-end fight. Look at losing quality Airmen, losing our credibility. And, unfortunately, I’m also thinking about how we might lose aspects of our national security.”

Prove di guerra futura ...

Quote

More than 1,600 personnel, 60 companies, over a dozen aircraft, and dozens of radars and sensors came together for a massive Air Force-led event that utilized everything from boots on the ground to satellites in space to test how the service expects to fight a war in the future.
The event culminated when a cruise missile was downed by a “smart” bullet.
The Air Force’s second “Advanced Battle Management System onramp,” long delayed because of COVID-19, took place on Sept. 3, largely within four national training ranges, as well as a part operations center, part fusion cell at Joint Base Andrews, Md.
The new cloud-based, artificial intelligence-fueled command center brought together new and legacy ways of fighting wars into the service’s push for joint all-domain command and control.

For nearly 80 years, experimental X-planes have been the marker of cutting-edge aerospace technology.
Now, the digital age is ushering in a new kind of aircraft: the e-series.
The Air Force and Space Force will begin adding “e” to the names of aircraft, weapons, and satellites that are designed and tested using digital engineering, Air Force Secretary Barbara M. Barrett said Sept. 14 at the Air Force Association’s virtual Air, Space & Cyber Conference.
“For 73 years, the entire history of the Air Force, X-planes have represented technological innovation,” Barrett said.
“Today, the e-plane and e-sat will join them in making history and ensuring Airmen and space professionals have modern tools to protect our nation.”

Nonostante tutto ... li stiamo aspettando nel Regno Unito entro il 2021 ...

The head of U.S. Air Forces in Europe is “convinced” the command will base F-35As at RAF Lakenheath, U.K., on time in late 2021, despite some delays to military construction and a possible slowdown in F-35 deliveries because of COVID-19.
“I am clear eyed that we’ve got a fair amount of work to do from the infrastructure needed to get the facilities ready, and at the same time work through the natural challenges of any bed down that has to do with the appropriate connectivity, security clearances, and those types of activities required to get an airplane in,” USAFE boss Gen. Jeffrey L. Harrigian told reporters during a panel at AFA’s virtual Air, Space & Cyber Conference on Sept. 14.
“But, we’re looking at the end of ’21 as the target remains on track for us to get the airplanes here.”
The original plan was to have the aircraft begin arriving this year, but that slipped to 2021.
Now construction delays have threatened that timeline, with projects about 25 percent over the $480 million budget ...

Quote

Airmen from Aviano Air Base, Italy, and Ramstein Air Base, Germany, will train with their counterparts from Bulgaria, Greece, and Romania as part of exercise Thracian Viper 20, the 31st Fighter Wing said Sept. 18.
The exercise, which is being held Sept. 18-25 at Graf Ignatievo Air Base, Bulgaria, looks to boost participating air forces’ “operational capacity, capability, and interoperability” with its host country, a wing release stated.
“During the exercise, U.S. and Bulgarian air forces will conduct training, enhancing our ability to rapidly deploy to remote locations and take command and control of the region,” U.S. Air Forces in Europe-Air Forces Africa wrote in a release.

For Aviano Air Base’s 555th Fighter Squadron, Thracian Viper 20 is about more than just training.
The multilateral exercise, to which the squadron sent Airmen and six F-16s, boosts “operational capacity and capability,” as well as interoperability with Bulgaria, Maj. Rohan Naldrett-Jays, the squadron’s chief of standardizations and evaluation, told Air Force Magazine.
But, it also helps the Italy-based squadron fine-tune its ability to deploy aircraft and manpower anywhere in the European theater with agility - a critical part of Chief of Staff Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr.’s “accelerate change, or lose” directive for the Total Force.

"Exercise Wolff Pack" ... aerocisterne KC-135 dell'USAF in appoggio alle forze aeree degli alleati europei ...

Quote

KC-135 Stratotankers from the 100th Air Refueling Wing at RAF Mildenhall, U.K., practiced supporting other aircraft in “Exercise Wolff Pack,” a multinational event over Europe that ended Oct. 1.
The three-day effort vetted the wing’s ability to deploy its aircraft to multiple places across Europe “in order to protect and defend partners, allies, and U.S. interests at a moment’s notice” and sharpen the agile combat employment (ACE) construct, wing spokesperson Capt. Shelley A. Spreier told Air Force Magazine in a Sept. 30 email.
ACE is the Air Force’s effort to move troops and planes around the globe quickly and with less reliance on brick-and-mortar installations, to be more responsive and resilient if bases are threatened.

Edwards AFB ... dopo 11 anni l'Air Force organizza un Airshow molto "sui generis" ...

Quote

Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., had scheduled its first on-base air show in 11 years to take place in October 2020.
Then the coronavirus pandemic intervened.
COVID-19 has forced Airmen across the country to get creative in hosting air shows, as everything from concerts to medical appointments moves online to avoid gathering crowds.
The 412th Test Wing at Edwards is no different.
In response to this year’s unique challenges, Edwards this week is hosting the Aerospace Valley Hybrid Air Show, wing spokesman and air show executive director Ed Buclatin said in an email.

La nuova frontiera dell'addestramento ... alle soglie della fantascienza ... :woot:

Quote

Some will feel like a slight tingling sensation.
Others will feel nothing at all.
The electrode placed inside the ear canal isn’t designed to shock.
Rather, the US Air Force Research Laboratory (ARFL) believes the earbud-like device, when placed next to the brain’s vagas nerve, will have more of an intellectually stimulating effect.
It ought to create moments of super learning, controllable periods of focus that allow pilots to soak up their flight training faster than humanly possible.
In August, the AFRL’s 711th Human Performance Wing launched its Individualized Neural Learning System (iNeuraLS) project, an effort to speed up pilot training through brain stimulation.
The US Air Force (USAF) has been dogged for years by a pilot shortage and hopes the technology can help it quickly refill its ranks.

Lt. Col. Jared “Vic” Santos ... 1000 ore di volo su F-35A ...

Quote

Lt. Col. Jared “Vic” Santos, 388th Fighter Wing special projects manager, recently became the first USAF Airman to accrue 1,000 flying hours in the F-35A Lightning II fighter jet, the wing announced.
Santos hit the milestone during an approximately two-hour, “four-on-six tactical intercept” training sortie Oct. 22 over the Utah Test and Training Range, according to a release.
Wing Commander Col. Steven Behmer heralded the moment as a victory for Santos, his wing, and the service at large.
A relatively short time ago, the Air Force was standing this program up,” Behmer said in the release (*)
Now we’ve got our first 1,000-hour-pilot. Pilots like Vic are able to pass that experience on to younger pilots in the F-35 community. They are really going to get the best out of this jet, which is already very capable, and continuing to improve.”

Sono iniziati i collaudi delle tute anti-G destinate all'impiego da parte di piloti di sesso femminile ...

Quote

A team of five female Airmen last week evaluated a flight suit designed to be more comfortable and functional for women pilots battling gravitational forces in the cockpit.
High-speed pilots wear G-suits to avoid health issues when they rapidly accelerate in flight.
The suits put pressure on the abdomen and legs to prevent blood from pooling away from the heart and brain, which can cause blackouts.
Since 2001, female pilots have worn G-suits made for a standard male body.
The Air Force Life Cycle Management Center and the innovation hub AFWERX modified the Advanced Technology Anti-Gravity Suits (ATAGS) with adjustable panels in the waist, thighs, and calves to make room for different body proportions, without reducing the performance of the air bladder that inflates around a pilot’s waist to protect them during high-G maneuvers ...
