Aviano AB è operativa ...

Quote

Aviano Air Base is situated in the northeast of Italy, not far from what was the global hotspot of the new coronavirus outbreak.
However, as the virus spread through the region, Aviano’s Airmen and aircraft have been able to fly as much as normal, if not more, through a realignment of their training priorities, increased social distancing, and finding new ways to be flexible.
“Projecting combat airpower is our primary mission, and that is a way we’re going to contribute to beating this virus,” said Capt. Claire Bieber, an F-16 pilot with Aviano’s 510th Fighter Squadron.
“I know that sounds like it’s not correlated, but it is important to make sure that both Americans and everybody else knows that this isn’t going to beat us and that we’re going to continue to be ready, no matter what hazard or threat is thrown our way.

"eVTOL" ... l'USAF prende l'iniziativa ...

Quote

The US Air Force (USAF) plans to launch an electric-vertical take-off-and-landing (eVTOL) aircraft development effort, called Agility Prime, at an online event on 27 April.
The service wants to boost the efforts of the nascent commercial eVTOL aircraft industry by funding the creation of technologies which also could be used for military purposes, it says on 14 April (*).

Altre due basi per gli F-35 assegnate alla ANG ...

The Department of the Air Force selected Truax Field, Wisconsin, and Dannelly Field, Alabama, for the next two Air National Guard F-35A Lightning II locations.
F-35As will begin to replace many of the older fourth-generation aircraft, but the Air Force will continue to fly a mix of fifth and fourth-generation fighters into the 2040s.
This will allow the Air Force to maintain enough fighters to meet combatant commander requirements, provide required training, and allow a reasonable and uninterrupted deployment tempo for the force.

Fine (temporanea?) di un' era ...

The Air Force announced April 16 it will no longer base strategic bombers outside of the continental United States, marking an end to the service’s 16-year continuous bomber presence at Andersen Air Force Base, Guam.
But before the last bomber left the island, USAF reminded the world of its combat power with an impressive “elephant walk” that included five B-52 strategic bombers, six KC-135 tankers, an MH-60S Knighthawk helicopter, an RQ-4 Global Hawk, and a U.S. Navy MQ-4C Triton (*).
“U.S. strategic bombers will continue to operate in the Indo-Pacific, to include Guam, at the timing and tempo of our choosing,” said Air Force Global Strike Command in a statement.
“We will maximize all opportunities to train alongside our allies and partners, to build interoperability, and bolster our collective ability to be operationally unpredictable.”

Not even a global pandemic can stop Pacific Air Forces from taking delivery of its first two F-35 strike fighters.
The fifth-generation fighters landed at Eielson Air Force, Alaska (*), on April 21, marking a historic shift for the 354th Fighter Wing, which will now take on a combat mission in addition to its role training U.S. and partner forces through major exercises like Red Flag-Alaska.
“They are on their way and we are ecstatic,” 354th Fighter Wing Commander Col. Ben Bishop said shortly after the jets departed Lockheed Martin’s Fort Worth, Texas, facility.
“Moving forward we’ll be charged with projecting airpower from the top of the globe. It’s significant growth for the 354th Fighter Wing, and also for the Eielson community.”

Ritorno ad Aviano ...

Quote

Airmen and F-16s from the “Triple Nickel” returned to Aviano Air Base, Italy, in mid-April following a six-month combat deployment to the Middle East - the first time a full unit has returned from a deployment since the Defense Department ordered a restriction on movement because of COVID-19.
The Airmen from the 555th Fighter Squadron returned to a region of Italy that has been hit hard by the new coronavirus.
The Pentagon’s restriction of movement directive, first ordered in mid-March and extended on April 20, has forced some deployed service members to remain downrange because of concerns regarding the virus.

region of Italy  that has been hit hard by the new coronavirus

Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson ... spettacolare “Moose Walk” ...

Quote

When rows and rows of aircraft, 35 in total, lined up for the largest display of airpower in recent years at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, they had two audiences in mind: the Airmen on the ground that made it happen, and most importantly, those who would see the photographs from abroad.
The May 5 “Moose Walk” included 26 F-22s, two C-12s, two C-130s, two E-3 Sentrys, and three C-17s, in addition to HH-60s and a C-17 already in the air.
It was a massive display of readiness by the 3rd and 176th Wings at the Alaska base.
Airmen worked in shifts leading up to the event, combining a full day’s worth of takeoffs and landings into one onslaught of aircraft.
“The message is that we’re ready. We’ve always been ready,” 3rd Wing Commander Col. Robert Davis told Air Force Magazine in an interview.

Quote

The sky above the North Sea in Europe filled with dozens of USAF aircraft on May 27 as fighters from multiple bases joined together in red vs. blue teams to prove that U.S. Air Forces in Europe crews are ready for a high-end fight, even as the COVID-19 pandemic forces the command to change its schedule.
Since the outbreak began, USAFE has canceled or suspended 14 exercises, leaving a shortage in its crews’ ability to train at a high level outside of their own local airspace.
The May 27 “large force employment” event is the culmination of about a month and a half of planning led by RAF Lakenheath, England, to “sharpen combat readiness” across fourth-generation fighter crews at three USAF bases, said Capt. Nathan Hartoin, the chief of weapons at the 48th Fighter Wing who planned the mission, in an interview with Air Force Magazine.
All told, 38 aircraft came together, including F-15Cs and F-15Es from Lakenheath; KC-135s from RAF Mildenhall, England; F-16s from Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany; F-16s from Aviano Air Base, Italy; a NATO E-3 AWACS; and the 603rd Air Operations Center at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, monitoring the action.
Planners and aircrews, because of travel restrictions and social distancing guidelines, met virtually to plan the training event and debrief.
Maintainers split into shifts and worked to get aircraft ready.

Coronavirus ... si sperimenta il calore ... ?

Quote

The US Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) has shown that common ground heaters could be used to raise the temperature of aircraft interiors to levels sufficient to kill the coronavirus and other biological contaminants.
In two tests conducted in May 2020, the interior of a Boeing C-17 cargo aircraft was sealed using materials common to military installations and was heated to 10°C (50°F) above ambient temperatures over a six-hour period, says the AFRL on 9 June (*)
The heaters used in the experiment are found at all military bases, and are commonly used by maintenance crews to keep warm or to heat equipment.
