Tempi duri per le basi dell'Air Force ... dopo Tyndall ora tocca a Offutt ...

The home to America's prized RC-135 "Rivet Joint" strategic reconnaissance and E-4B "Nightwatch" Advanced Airborne Command Post aircraft, as well as others, and the headquarters of U.S. Strategic Command (STRATCOM), is flooding with water from a swollen Missouri River.
Offutt Air Force Base sits near Omaha, Nebraska and is considered one of the most critical installations in the U.S. Air Force's portfolio.
Not only does it house extremely high-value, but low density reconnaissance and command and control aircraft—massively expensive platforms that are essential to national security - but it is also the beating heart of STRATCOM that oversees America's strategic nuclear forces.
In fact, a brand new command bunker, buried underground at the base, was just opened in January - which sounds far less than ideal considering water is now nearly covering the end of the base's runway.

The cost of buying, equipping, and preparing to operate the two Boeing 747s that will become the next Air Force One presidential transport aircraft is now pegged at $5.3 billion, nearly one-third more than the figure routinely touted by the White House, according to Air Force officials and Pentagon budget documents.
The projected price tag — included in the Pentagon’s fiscal 2020 budget proposal — marks the first time the Defense Department has provided a total cost estimate for the project.
It includes not only the cost of the planes themselves, but also work to build a new hangar complex at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland and other administrative, engineering, and development work.

As many as 24 F-35 strike fighters and more than 250 airmen assigned to the Active Duty’s 388th Fighter Wing and the Air Force Reserve’s 419th FW - USAF’s only combat-coded F-35 wings - will relocate to Mountain Home AFB, Idaho, while the runway at Hill AFB, Utah, closes for construction, according to a base release (*)
The aircraft, which are assigned to the 34th Fighter Squadron, are expected to remain at their temporary home for more than two months while the $43.6-million construction project is completed.

L'USAF punta alla possibilità di effettuare, in caso di situazioni di emergenza, lanci spaziali militari nel giro di 24 ore ...

A recent Air Force solicitation takes the first steps toward being able to order space launches on just 24 hours notice, a goal that would make the service more responsive to combat developments and avoid the weeks- or months-long waits typical of launches.
“The US Air Force is investigating the possible procurement of a capability to rapidly launch and deploy space payloads critical to national security in an ultra-responsive manner,” the service wrote in a May 30 sources-sought notice.
“The objective is 24 hours from ‘call up’ notification to on-orbit capability.”
If industry doesn’t believe a 24-hour window is long enough, they should recommend a different time frame that would work in case of a national emergency, the Air Force said.

The Defense Department is starting to design flight equipment with female aviators in mind.
Women pilots in the Air Force and Navy gathered at JB Langley-Eustis, Va., on June 4 for a female fitment event, where officials took their measurements for uniforms, helmets, and masks.
The data gathered will be used to design prototypes for female flight equipment, which has historically been based off of male measurements, according to a USAF release (*).

A group of U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy female aviators have a discussion about some of the improvements they want to see made to their flight equipment during a Female Fitment Event at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, June 4, 2019.
The event took measurements from female aviators from the U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Navy at various stages in their careers, to get an accurate depiction of the changes needed to flight equipment.

The US military’s fleet of Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II and F-22 Raptor stealth fighters will fail to meet a 80% mission capability rate by September 2019 as directed by US Department of Defense (DoD).
Former Secretary of Defense James Mattis ordered the USAF and US Navy (USN) in September 2018 to increase mission capable rates for the F-35, F-22, F-16 and Boeing F/A-18 to more than 80% by the end of September 2019.
The mission capability rate is defined as the percentage of a fleet of an aircraft that are able to perform at least one assigned mission over a period of time.
Mark Esper, who is nominated be secretary of defense, wrote in prepared testimony for the US Senate Armed Services Committee’s confirmation hearing that the USAF’s leading combat aircraft are not expected to meet the 80% mission capability rate.

"The United States Air Force is aware of the Facebook post," service spokeswoman Laura Mcandrews told Military.com in an email Monday.
"The Nevada Test and Training Range is an area where the Air Force tests and trains combat aircraft. As a matter of practice, we do not discuss specific security measures, but any attempt to illegally access military installations or military training areas is dangerous."
