Polemica .... serve o non serve l'USAF agli Stati Uniti ?

Actually, America DOES Need the Air Force .... Michael Bob Starr defends the flying branch from Rob Farley ....

Dr. Robert Farley recently wrote that America does not need the Air Force.

His argument rests on two assertions: that Air Force missions are insufficiently distinct from the Army and Navy to justify an independent organization, and that the existence of a separate Air Force renders America’s military “insufficiently flexible to negotiate the modern security landscape.”

Red Flag-Alaska Wraps Up ....

More than 60 aircraft and 2,600 personnel from the United States, Australia, Japan, New Zealand, and South Korea participated in the two-week Red Flag-Alaska air combat exercise. RF-A 13-3, the latest iteration of the Pacific Air Forces-sponsored training event, concluded on Aug, 23.

Participating aircraft included A-10s, C-17s, C-130s, E-3 AWACS, F-22s, KC-135s, Navy F/A-18s, Japanese F-15s, and South Korean F-15Ks.

They operated from Eielson Air Force Base and Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, utilizing the airspace of the Joint Pacific Alaska Range Complex for their mock aerial dogfights.

Civil Air Patrol aircraft also took part, simulating hostile, low-flying special operations platforms.

Red Flag is meant to challenge pilots and aircrews by placing them in the types of stressing scenarios they might face in their first 10 combat sorties of a conflict.

The Air Force-Japanese Air Force Renaissance ....

Airpower's effectiveness in the Asia-Pacific region will turn on America's alliances with its most stalwart allies, according to Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Welsh and Pacific Air Forces Commander Gen. Herbert Carlisle.

The Air Force's relations with the Japan Air Self-Defense Force, for example, are experiencing a renaissance, as cooperation in core areas such as command and control and air defense has noticeably improved in the last few years, said PACAF officials and commanders here in Japan, where Welsh is visiting as part of his tour of the region.

Regional security matters, such as disputes with China over territories in the East China Sea, are bringing the United States and Japan closer in many ways.

"Three to four years ago, our [operational] integration with the Japanese wasn't as good as it could be," said Brig. Gen. James Hecker, commander of the 18th Wing at Kadena Air Base.

"It's a completely different story now," said Hecker, who served as US Forces Japan's director of operations from 2009 to 2011.

He noted that cooperation in areas like air superiority training is better, as is information sharing, especially when there are classification issues.

B-52 Maintainers' Quick Action Saves Bomber, Protects Aircrew ....

Quick action last week by airmen at Barksdale AFB, La., extinguished a fire that broke out on a returning B-52 bomber and, in the process, protected the lives of the aircrew, according to a base release.

The B-52 was taxiing to its parking spot after landing on Aug. 27, when maintainers noticed smoke, states Barksdale's Aug. 29 release.

As the bomber was coming to a rest, its No. 3 brake caught on fire. SSgt. Mark Corral and A1C Elias Delarosa, both of the 2nd Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, sprang into action, grabbing the fire bottle to battle the flames.

Meanwhile, SSgt. Billy Campbell of the squadron, gave the aircrew the emergency signals to shut down the engines and exit the aircraft.

MSgt. Kevin Rowe, 96th Aircraft Maintenance Unit production superintendent, and SSgt. Brad Davis of the 2nd AMXS helped evacuate the aircrew.

"These things can get out of control very quickly and this emergency could have easily caused more extensive damage and possibly funerals," said Col. Andrew Gebara, 2nd Bomb Wing commander, in thanking these airmen for their actions and courage.

On Aug. 27, 2013 a B-52H Stratofortress was taxiing on the flightline when a fire broke out around the #3 brake.

The maintenance Airmen responded to the fire and worked quickly to evacuate the aircraft and control the fire.

Staff Sgts. Billy Campbell, Martavius Davis, Mark Corral, Airman 1st Class Elias Delarosa and Master Sgt. Kevin Rowe were recognized by Gebara for their heroic actions.

USAF readiness for an attack in Syria raises eyebrows in Israel ....

In Israel many eyebrows were raised as the eyes below them read a statement made last week by US air force chief of staff Gen Mark Welsh.

While touring Japan, the general said the air force is in fact not ready for possible action in Syria, because of the effects of sequestration on the readiness of air force combat squadrons.

C-5s Complete Helicopter Swap ....

Mobility airmen at Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan, finished the air leg of a multi-modal equipment swap-out between the Army's 1st Combat Aviation Brigade and 3rd CAB, according to a Kandahar release.

During the nearly three-week effort in August, C-5As from JBSA-Lackland, Tex., and C-5Ms from Dover AFB, Del., airlifted more than 120 helicopters between Kandahar and Western Europe, states the Sept. 4 release.

The deployed aircrews worked with members of Kandahar's 8th Expeditionary Air Mobility Squadron, Det. 1 to complete the task.

"A lot of advance planning made any obstacles we encountered minor and manageable," said Capt. Rob Cross, 8th EAMS aircraft maintenance officer.

"A solid crew of operators and maintainers backed by a solid supporting cast from Team KAF made the whole operation a grand slam," he said.

F-117-25.jpg

The Lockheed F-117A, world’s first operational stealth aircraft and one of the most secret planes ever developed, only flew after darkness until its existence was publicly acknowledged in 1988.

Then, the veil of secrecy on the “Nighthawk” was gradually lifted and the stealth fighter jet (actually, an attack plane) regularly flew in daylight and later began taking part to airshows.

Although it’s not clear who took it (it must be an Air Force image) and where it was taken, the photo in this post is quite impressive: 59 production aircraft (one of those was lost to the Serbian Air Defense during “Operation Allied Force“) served with the U.S. Air Force until the type was retired in 2008 and slightly about half of them can be seen flying together in the image.

Sequester may force USAF to retire entire fleets of aircraft ....

The US Air Force will likely have to cut entire fleets of aircraft to comply with the Congressional sequestration law, says a top service official. In order to retain a force capable of operating across the spectrum of operations, the USAF will have sacrifice single-mission aircraft in order to preserve multirole machines.

:hmm:

Too Many C-130s?

There's likely to be a reduction of perhaps 40 or so C-130s, said Gen. Paul Selva, head of Air Mobility Command.

In a press conference on Sept. 17 at AFA's 2013 Air and Space Conference, Selva said the Pentagon's independent cost-estimating shop looked at C-130 usage and determined "we may have estimated a little high" on how many are needed.

"What we are doing is taking a look at what part of that fleet is affordable and how we navigate over the next five years," said Selva.

"My position is that the fleet itself is affordable. It's how we deploy the fleet and who operates it," he said.

Some 70 percent of C-130s are in the Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve Command, and they are "very efficient," said Selva.

There are about 340 C-130s now in the force.

While "there is a disagreement on total numbers, I think we'll land right about the 300 number," he said.

There will also be adjustments to AMC force structure, said Selva.

His preference is to preserve the actual aircraft in inventory and achieve savings by changing how they're operated—by moving some to the Guard and Reserve.
