US Space Command under budget pressure, re-examines future ....

US Air Force Space Command is establishing its priorities ahead of the pending sequestration that will cut $580 million from its budget - including shutting down surveillance sites and re-examining future satellite constellations.

----

.... a separate surveillance radar in North Dakota is now operated only eight hours per day.

Another radar on Shemya Island, Alaska, was set to follow suit, but has been left at full power due to political tensions with North Korea, which has repeatedly threatened to fire missiles at the US.

Distinguished Warfare Medal .... marcia indietro ....

Distinguished Warfare Medal Eliminated ....

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel on Monday eliminated the Distinguished Warfare Medal, opting instead to create a new distinguishing device to affix to existing medals in order to recognize military personnel, such as remotely piloted aircraft and cyber operators, who have an extraordinary impact on combat operations while serving off the battlefield.
"Utilizing a distinguishing device to recognize impacts on combat operations reserves our existing combat medals for those service members who incur the physical risk and hardship of combat, perform valorous acts, are wounded in combat, or as a result of combat give their last full measure for our nation," reads Hagel's April 15 memorandum explaining his decision.
Hagel adopted the April 9 recommendation of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, in concurrence with the service Secretaries, to forego the medal.
His memo directs the Defense Department to develop within the next 90 days the award criteria and other details of the distinguishing device for his final approval.
The Pentagon in February unveiled the DWM.
The medal's order of precedence—above the Bronze Star Medal—raised objections among some lawmakers and veterans' organizations.
Hagel then ordered a review of the DWM led by JCS Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey.

“There are newer threats out there, quite frankly, that could defeat the aircraft that we currently have,” Deptula said. “That’s why the Air Force works so hard to recapitalize those aircraft by building F-22s and F-35s that can operate, using modern technology, to achieve air dominance by networking capabilities with sensors that we never had in the past.

NORAD, Russian Officials Plan Upcoming Exercise ....

NORAD and Russian air force officials met late last month at Peterson AFB, Colo., to hash out details of the upcoming Vigilant Eagle exercise.

This year's Vigilant Eagle is scheduled to take place in August in Anchorage, Alaska, and Anadyr, Russia, and will include a live-fly element as the two organizations fine-tune procedures to deal with scenarios in which a hijacked commercial aircraft traverses both NORAD-controlled and Russian airspace, according to NORAD's April 30 release.

"The Vigilant Eagle exercise series has been an extraordinary and historic opportunity for NORAD and the Russian Federation to coordinate on the response to a mutually acknowledged hijacking threat," said Joe Bonnet, NORAD's joint training and exercises director.

"From a participant's perspective, it is more than a military exercise; it is creating lasting bonds and partnerships extremely valuable for the security of our nations," he added.

The meeting took place from April 24 to April 27.

The final planning conference will take place in June in Ottawa, Canada, states the release.

Last year's Vigilant Eagle activities featured a command-post exercise and had no live-fly element.

Tinker Spared from Tornado's Wrath ....

The ferocious tornado that leveled large swaths of Moore, Okla., on Monday spared Tinker Air Force Base and the Oklahoma City Air Logistics Complex, a base spokeswoman told the Daily Report on Tuesday.

Although the base was up and running at mid-day on May 21, many nearby roads were closed and phone lines were down, and Tinker officials were still trying to make an accounting of the nearly 30,000 airmen and civilian employees who work on base, she said.

Tinker dispatched assets—emergency vehicles and fire trucks—that, along with many volunteers from the base, were helping local authorities deal with the aftermath of the storms, which killed at least 24 people and destroyed a local school and hospital.

The tornado hit about three miles south of Tinker, said base officials in a May 21 release.

There are more than 18,000 dependents and 36,000 retirees in the six counties surrounding the base, which is Oklahoma's single largest employer.

Tinker units operate E-3 AWACS and KC-135R tankers, and the Oklahoma City depot is the hub of repair and overhaul for the B-1B, B-52, C/KC-135, E-3, and Navy E-6 aircraft, and the F100, F101, F108, F110, F117, F118, F119 and TF-33 engines.

Tinker's Aircraft Return ....

After relocating to Davis-Monthan AFB, Ariz., to avoid severe storms, six E-3 AWACs airplanes and two Navy E-6Bs returned home to Tinker AFB, Okla.

The aircraft, carrying crew members from the 552nd Aircraft Maintenance Squadron and the 72nd Security Forces Squadron, arrived back at Tinker on May 21, according to a Davis-Monthan release.

Their return came one day after a devastating tornado wreaked havoc near the base.

One E-3 and the E-6Bs flew to Arizona on May 17, while the five other E-3s departed Tinker on May 20, just hours before the tornado touched down in Moore, several miles south of the base.

Tinker officials chose Davis-Monthan because of its location, around-the-clock operations, and ramp space that can support heavy aircraft, said A1C Barbie Kramer, airfield operations coordinator of Davis-Monthan's 355th Operations Support Squadron.

"Tinker didn't have anywhere closer that they could go to quickly," said Kramer.

"With a tornado warning or any other evacuation, they can come to us, and they know we have the space or will coordinate for the space to be made," she said.

Cinema, USAF e .... grande pubblico ....

Hollywood Helps Connect Air Force with Public ....

The Air Force’s relationship with Hollywood is helping the service connect with the public, according to the National Museum of the United States Air Force.

The museum, located at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio, is home to several aircraft that have found their way onto the big screen.

Most recently, the latest Superman film, "Man of Steel," will have the Boeing C-17—USAF's first Globemaster III—which sits in the museum’s air park.

This C-17 has appeared in four other major films, including "Transformers" and "Iron Man."

The museum’s A-10, C-130, and F-35 also were in films.

Other Hollywood connections can be found in the museum’s Celebrities in Uniform exhibit, which includes uniforms and personal memorabilia from well-known actors like Clark Gable, Jimmy Stewart, and Ronald Reagan.

"Many of these films, television shows, and actors with connections to the Air Force are familiar to Americans," said Jeff Underwood, the museum historian, in a June 12 release.

"These programs highlight just a few ways in which the US military shares its story with the public, reminding them of the military's presence as they go about their daily lives."
